“Freak out?”

“Yeah. The tears. Ordering me away from you.”

Sighing, I say, “I don’t want to discuss that. Anyway, leaving work isn’t going to keep me safe. If what you say is true, I can’t leave my sisters and my father! I have to protect them too.”

“I don’t know how much you know about my MC, but we’re powerful, dangerous, and we have connections. I can have men on your sisters and your father, watching and keeping them safe. Where you’re concerned, they want to take you out. The only way that I can protect you is that you leave work and home.”

“And go where?”

“With me.”

“No.”

That idea thrills, excites, and scares me.

“I’d take you to a safe place. I promise.”

“No.”

“If you trust my brother, then you can trust me.”

“No!”

“Goddamnit, woman!” he says through clenched teeth. “You’re a fucking thorn in my side, but if I don’t protect you, I’ll have Ryan to answer to.”

What makes him think that?

“I’ll find somewhere safe to stay.”

“There’s no place safe from Viboras except for with me.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

“Do I look like this is a fucking joke? You’ll stay with me,” he snarls.

“I can’t,” I say, trying to push past him.

He grips my shoulders and stares down at me as my hands push against his chest. He’s one solid surface, and he won’t budge. His heart thunders in his chest, much like my own.

“Simone, you can trust me to protect you with my life,” he says as his gaze drops to my lips.

Something clenches inside of me, pulsing into burning heat. Then I remember who he is and push hard at his chest. He releases me, and I push past him and run into Andrea when I leave the room.

She looks between Nitro and me, smirks, and says, “I was just coming to look for you two. Guess who’s awake?”

Nitro glances at me and rushes past, and I hurry behind him. I know he wants to know what his brother has to say.

“Is Dr. Rhodes still there?” I ask Andrea as she works hard to keep pace with Nitro and me.

“Yeah.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. I know that things are about to get hectic around here. As soon as the police know he’s awake, they’ll flood this place as much as possible.

I see Nitro stiffen at the doorway when his eyes rest on his brother. Although I don’t know him, I can tell he’s struggling to keep his composure and not break.

I stand beside him, placing an encouraging hand on his arm. He looks down at me, and I can see his eyes over his shades for the first time. The uncertainty in his eyes tells me that despite his hard-core edge, he has been afraid his brother wouldn’t make it.

Dr. Rhodes steps back and says, “All right. Everything is looking good so far.”
