“Can’t believe I slept through that. Wonder what woke me up then.”

“I tripped over Zeus in the kitchen and dropped his metal water dish when I was going to refill it. Made a loud clanging noise on the floor.”

“Oh.”

“You carry?”

“Carry?”

“A gun. You know how to shoot?”

“No. Why would I need that when you say this place is like Fort Knox?”

“It’s important to know how to protect yourself, Moni, even after you leave me.”

The thought of leaving him, this place and Zeus, makes me lonely for some odd reason.

“I don’t like violence, Nitro. The thought of possibly taking someone’s life scares the hell out of me.”

“I get it, but it’s either you or them. I can teach you how to shoot. Why be a victim when you don’t have to be, Simone?”

“It just brings back bad memories.”

“They’ll never go away,” he says sadly. “You just have to learn to live with them.”

I think about everything I learned earlier and know I’m not brave enough to bring them up now. One thing is clear about Nitro. He has a temper, and his personality changes like the weather.

I like this peaceful place we’re in right now.

Stretching, I stifle a yawn.

“Think you’d better go back to sleep,” he says.

“Why?”

“If you know what’s best for you...you’d take your ass to sleep in that short t-shirt you’re wearing.”

I roll my eyes, shake my head, and get up to do exactly that. Being in his presence isn’t doing me any good, either.

Just as I’m crossing the threshold into his bedroom area, I look over my shoulder at him.

His gaze meets mine, and he says, “Not yet, but soon.”
