“You’re not his. You’re fucking him, ain’t ya?”

“Excuse me? No, I’m not involved with your brother in any form. We’re friends and nothing more,” I scoff.

His eyes darken, and his Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. Before he can make a move, I need to clear the air.

“I’m grateful for what you’re doing here, but I’m not an...Angel. I don’t repay favors with my body. So, if that’s what you’re expecting, maybe I should leave.”

“Me wanting you and you wanting me has nothing to do with repayment, sweetheart. Trust me. I know when a woman just wants me.”

“You’re full of yourself.”

“You could be full of me too.”

Shaking my head, I push off the couch, but he grabs my wrist and pulls me back down.

“I’ve got a couple of men watching your house. I’m not saying this to scare you, but there’s been a black Ford Explorer with tinted windows passing it up occasionally. The SUV drives by slowly but never stops. Sometimes it parks down the street, but close enough to keep an eye on your home. Anyone you know driving this vehicle?”

A chill passes over me, replacing the heat his words and stare generate.

“Older model...twenty-seventeen, or eighteen?”

“Yeah.”

I rub my arms and pull my legs up underneath me on the couch.

“What, Moni?”

“It’s just that...remember when I told you about the guys in the parking lot yesterday?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s what they were driving.”

He nods, and his eyes narrow. “We’ve already begun addressing the issue, but I have to keep a close eye on you more than ever for the next few days. I know it’s not easy to be locked up like this, but I need you to remain here.”

“How do you figure I’m safer here than anywhere else?”

“I own this building, which means it belongs to my club. Nobody’s stupid enough to fuck with Sinner’s property. I have men on this building day and night before you came and two more since you arrived. The security I have for this building is like Fort Knox, and all the residents have had extensive background checks. I know everything there is to know about them, even the shit they don’t want me to know.”

“Isn’t that an invasion of privacy?”

“There’s no privacy when it comes to where I lay my head and where I work. I’m in control of everything around here.”

He leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Simone, I have to be. The world I live in, and the life I’ve chosen isn’t easy, but it was my choice. Because of that, I always have to be vigilant and protect everything attached to me.”

“Like Zeus?” I ask, looking over at the sleeping dog and allowing myself a small smile in the face of my fears.

“Like Zeus,” he replies, smiling at me when I turn back around and face him. “And you. For a while.”

“I was scared when I woke up because I thought someone had broken in. I heard noises and didn’t know what it was, so I leaned over the bed to find Zeus, and he wasn’t there.”

“I’d been home for a while. You slept so well; I didn’t want to wake you.”

“You’d been in the bedroom already.”

He nods, and a smirk plays on his lips.

“Came in to check on you, and Zeus woke up and followed me out here.”
