Page 95 of A Bullet Between Us

Once we were both under the protection of the church, I was able to look up to him, and let my eyes get captivated by him.

“Kroshka,” he murmured, not leaving any space between us.

My hand ran over his hair gently before caressing his jawline as his scruff pricked my skin.

“Ilias,” I replied.

“Have I mentioned how stunning you are?” His lips lifting at the corners.

“Not since I woke up with your body over mine.”

Ilias chuckled with eyes that ran over my body before they shot up to my mouth. His thumb traced my bottom lip and the air thickened, making it difficult to breathe evenly.

“That was hours ago.”

“Mhm,” I managed to reply.

“What’s a few more when we can end the day the same way we started it?”

Now it was my time to chuckle.

“We should take our seats. I’ve been counting the minutes for this arrangement to fulfill.” His eyes held a touch of alarm but it was overthrown with the sound of relief in his tone. The promise that granted us the freedom to live.

“I need to do something before I walk inside,” I murmured, gazing over the side church door.

He didn’t respond, and when I shifted my attention back to him, Ilias watched me carefully.

“Out here?” he asked.

The rain had died, leaving behind humidity and quietness.

I nodded.

His brow raised. “Fine, I’ll be right inside. Don’t be long.”

As I pulled away from him, his arm resisted bringing me back. Ilias held my jaw captive, bringing our mouths to collide in a haste kiss. My hand balled his tuxedo, savoring the feel of his lips possessively taking mine. He stopped abruptly, giving our mouths a few inches of distance.

“Fucking stunning.” He shook his head, unable to wait the few hours he’d spoken short minutes ago. “Now go, before I change my mind.” Ilias ushered as he gave my hips a tight grip before he entered the church.

His back was visible through the stained glass window, waiting. I bit my smile with a small head shake and walked a few steps deeper into the quaint courtyard.

Looking up, the clouds parted, letting small rays of sunshine to slip through the sky, bringing their light into the world.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to the smell of petrichor that lingered in serenity, and now was the right time to gather the courage to do one last thing I’d been thinking since the day after the charity gala.

I fished for the note inside my small clutch, and once my fingers caught the paper, I pulled it out and opened it, tracing every crease with my thumb.

With the note in one hand and my phone in the other, I dialed and waited.

The phone line wasn’t disconnected. It worked, and I was sent straight to voicemail.

I waited until the tone rang.

“Hey, it’s me,” I said with a dim smile. “I’ve waited till this day to talk to you in the only way I could.” My eyes fell back to the note. My chest constricted as sorrow moistened my eyes. “I just wanted to tell you, I got your note, and I did run.” Tears fell freely, remembering how I left his lifeless green eyes behind. “You would’ve been a great doctor. You would’ve made a woman lucky to call her your fiancé one day,” I gasped, “I’m sorry.” My heart ached in grief for his life, and I tried to regain my composure as I continued, “In the note, you asked for me to call when I was safe … I’m safe Martin. See you in the afterlife.”

THE END
