Grabbing my hand, he yanks me onto his lap. I look up at him in surprise.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m working very hard not to kill any of the Dullahans. If you move an inch, I’ll fail,” he whispers in my ear.

“Oh, God. Caine.”

“I know, lass. I’m trying to restrain myself for you.”

I rest my head against his shoulder and stay where I am. Hopefully Caine can keep his cool until after Liam is discharged. Assuming the surgery is successful. Just thinking about the alternative makes my heart plummet.

“Mrs. Locksley? Mr. Locksley?” a woman in scrubs asks.

My head shoots up and I hold my breath.

“It’s just Ms. Locksley,” Caine says. “Is Liam done in surgery?”

Hannah’s mouth is open, and she’s trying to take over the conversation. Caine isn’t having it. I don’t care who does the talking. I just need to hear the doctor say my brother is going to be alright. Liam is all the blood family I have left.

“Yes, it went very well. But the recovery is going to take months. His injuries from the crash are substantial. Then there is the gunshot wound.”

The doctor says a lot more. Not sparing us the grizzly details. I don’t hear a word she says. Her lips are moving, but no sound comes out. I must still be in shock.

“Gunshot wound?” Caine asks. I have to hand it to him, he fakes shock better than I could manage. “I’m assuming the police are investigating.”

I glance at him out of the corner of my eye.

“Naturally, we reported the injury. We aren’t clear on the details,” the doctor says. “He’s resting. But immediate family can visit him.”

I get up and start walking in the direction the doctor points, only to stop when I realize Caine isn’t following. There’s a strange ache in my chest. I want him with me. Then it hits me. I’m leaving Caine alone with the Dullahans.

“Are you coming, Caine?”

He shoots one last irate look at the Dullahans before following me. He takes my hand and gives it a squeeze. “It’ll be alright, lass.”

Shit, he can’t know how much I need him here. I can’t expose that kind of weakness to Caine. Dad wouldn’t want me to so I harden my heart.

I roll my eyes. “I don’t want a shootout in the hospital.”

“I’ll win you over yet.”

I ignore him. It’s easier that way. There are too many emotions roiling inside of me, like the sea. I don’t have room for dealing with Caine and even if I did, I don’t know where to begin untangling my feelings for him.

At the sight of Liam in a hospital bed, my heart breaks all over again. He’s wan and pale, covered in bandages and tubes. His eyes open slowly. “Aurora?”

“Hey, Liam.” I sit down next to him. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I was shot, but who cares? They’ve got me on the good drugs. What’s that asshole doing here?”

Caine ignores him. He stands at the back of the room, looking both coldly above the situation and devastatingly powerful at once.

“Puta di madre. Estas bien?”Motherfucker.Areyoualright?

“Liam tu es loco,” I say, struggling to keep my tone of voice pleasant. I glance at Caine, who doesn’t seem to understand Spanish. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure he would react to being called a motherfucker.

“Necesito que te hagas cargo de los Dullahans, Aurora.”IneedyoutotakeovertheDullahans,Aurora.

“Que?”
