I looked around the room—at the roses he’d brought, sitting in a vase on the counter, and the delicious meal plated in front of us—and couldn’t have disagreed more. “I think you’re doing all right so far. And again, as long as you talk to me, we can get through anything.”

Choosing each other every day and communication, I thought to myself. That would need to become our starting foundation.

“Choosing each other every day and communication.” His voice hit my ears, and I felt my eyes go wide.

“I said that out loud?”

He let out a laugh, and I swore it was like music to my ears. “You did, but I like it. So, with that being said, I’d really like to date you, if you’ll have me.”

I couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across my face because I’d been dying to hear those words from his luscious lips for well over nine months now, but I’d been convinced it was most likely never going to happen.

“Is that a yes?” he asked, staring at my mouth.

“Of course it’s a yes.”

“I’m going to try my best for you, Ava—I promise you that. God knows you deserve so much better than me, but I can’t give you up.”

My heart melted with his admission. He sounded so sincere. The rest of my words disappeared, so I reached across the table, my hand covering his, hoping he would take my touch as the answer to any questions he might still have.

He pulled out of my grasp, but my disappointment only lasted a second before he slid his chair across the floor and pushed out of it, stalking toward where I sat, my eyes watching his every move. He looked like a man on a mission, and I was it—the mission in question.

As soon as he reached me, he pulled me to a stand, our bodies so close that we shared the same air with each breath we took.

“I’m going to kiss you now,” he demanded, and I gave him what he wanted without complaint.

I’LL BE DESSERT

AVA

His mouth was on mine, so slow at first before I could literally feel him letting go and giving in. The kiss changed in the same moment he did. It turned possessive and filled with desire. His tongue was pressing against mine, his hand tight on the back of my neck, holding me firmly in place.

I gave in to him, silently letting him know that I’d go as far as he was willing to take us. And, yes, that included the bedroom. Giving myself over to Tony completely felt like the natural next step.

He kept kissing me, the groans escaping from some visceral place deep inside of him, and I grew nervous, thinking he might regret this.

Pulling away slowly, I cupped the side of his face and held him. “Do you want to stop?”

His eyes squeezed closed before he reopened them. A part of him seemed torn in half, between moving forward and letting go.

“I don’t want to stop,” he growled. “But if we keep going like this, I’m not going to be able to until I’m buried so deep inside you that I’m all you feel.”

A devilish grin crossed my face. “I don’t have a problem with that. Just so you know.”

Tony swallowed. He genuinely looked conflicted.

“What is it? What’s the matter?”

“I want to be inside you so badly that I can barely think about anything else,” he admitted. “But Lydia was the last woman I was with.”

I’d assumed that. “I figured as much.”

Tony sucked in a ragged breath. Whatever he was struggling with was eating him up inside. “If we do this, will it erase her? She’ll no longer be the last woman I was in. She won’t be the last person I made love to. Does moving on mean letting go?”

“It doesn’t have to,” I quickly answered before wrapping my arms around his muscular body, holding on tight.

We stood there, hugging each other like our lives depended on it, while my brain tried to formulate the proper response to make this all okay.

“Making love to me means that we’re starting something new. It doesn’t mean that your love for Lydia has to end. And it won’t. What you had with her will never die. It will never be replaced.” I let him go enough so he could look at me. “You don’t have to let Lydia go. Ever. All I ask is that you make a little room for me too.”
