“Well, let’s look over there first,” he said, pointing toward some trucks and SUVs. If we find nothing here, we can always check out the other lot. Perhaps it’s changed owners.”

Chills ran up my spine, and I shook my head. “It hasn’t. Seriously, this is the best lot in the area. We will find something here,” I said, my tone firm as I grabbed my jacket from the back seat and slipped it on and followed behind Ethan.

“Is there something wrong with that other lot?” Ethan questioned. “I’m not afraid of a shady character.” He winked.

“Aside from what I told you, no. I talked to a friend of mine that still lives here, and she said this is the place to look. The other one is much bigger but, with less choice. Plus, this one has better prices,” I said as I pointed out a white pickup, trying to distract him, but Ethan shook his head.

“No white, gets dirty too fast,” he said as we looked through the windows of some of the larger trucks on the lot. “This one is nice.” He stopped at a black Ford F-Series.

I put my hand up to the window and peeked inside. “Oh, very nice. You’d look good in this, I think.”

“You think?” Ethan asked.

I nodded. “I do.” I shyly smiled.

Ethan pulled the door open and began looking inside the truck. Satisfied, he glanced around and waved over to a sales associate to inquire about the truck. We listened to him go over all the features, along with the specs that were completely foreign to me. Once finished, the three of us piled into the truck and took it out for a test drive.

“Is the price firm?” he questioned.

The associate glanced at me and then looked over at Ethan. “I’m sure there is some wiggle room.”

We continued driving around, finally pulling back into the lot and parking the vehicle. Ethan handed the associate back the keys and told him he’d think about it. We walked a bit more, looked at a few more vehicles, when Ethan turned to me.

“You know, Peggy, I’ve always wanted one of those trucks. I think I might just see what kind of deal I can negotiate.”

“Go for it. I’ll run across the street and grab up a coffee,” I said.

“Sounds good.”

I watched Ethan head inside, and I took off across the street to the small coffee shop. I returned twenty minutes later with two hot coffees. I could see Ethan inside talking with the sales guy, so I walked over to my car and leaned against the hood. I was about halfway done with my coffee when I saw the door open, and Ethan approached me.

“How’s it going?” I asked.

“Good, he is just getting the paperwork ready.” He grinned.

I nodded. “I’m glad.”

“You know, I was thinking back to all the letters we exchanged.”

“Oh?”

“I was thinking back to the other day as well. You mentioning that noise your car was making? That was the noise we heard all the way here, wasn’t it?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“I thought so. You know, it doesn’t sound very good. I’m wondering if it’s not an engine problem.”

“Oh?” I grew worried at the serious expression on his face. “That’s something major, isn’t it?”

“Could be. I’m not a mechanic. Honestly, Peggy, perhaps it’s time to make a change yourself. Put the money that you’d put into a repair toward something newer and perhaps under warranty.”

I looked at my rusted-out car and shook my head. Panic filled me. Ethan didn’t know what he was talking about. Like he said, he wasn’t a mechanic. “No, this car is very reliable.”

Ethan nodded. “I’m sure it is. However, while we are here, I could help you choose one. I can probably get you a great bargain too. I mean, I ended up getting about nine off mine. He would probably do better if we both purchased one.”

“Perhaps.”

“Besides, this way I’d know he doesn’t take advantage of you. I can even check the car over, make sure it’s decent, if you want to go with a used option, that is.”
