Ethan looked at me and then nodded. “I am going to put in an offer. No need to look at the others,” he said, his voice exuding confidence.

“All right then, meet me at the office and we will get to it,” she said, locking the front door behind her.

ETHAN

I shut up the back of my truck and locked it, then glanced at my watch. It was a little after 1. I’d come to Cedar Landing today to pick some things up for Peggy’s shop and had called Melinda to see if she wanted to join me for some furniture shopping. I’d found out earlier in the week that they had accepted my offer on the house, and I already had a closing date. Plus, I wanted to talk to Melinda about something and I figured today was a perfect day to do it.

“We should just about be ready to go and furniture shop,” I said as Melinda made her way back from a coffee shop across the street.

“Perfect. I grabbed you a black coffee,” she said, waving the to-go cup in the air.

“Great. I’m going to need it.” I chucked. I knew how picky Melinda was with clothes, so I could only imagine she was the same or worse with furniture.

“Oh, Dad. It will not be that bad.”

“Judging from how picky you are with clothes, I think it will probably be unbearable.”

Melinda let out a laugh and climbed into the front of my truck.

“This is all, Mr. Alexander,” the young man who had been helping load up my truck said, plopping the last box in the back of my truck. “Just be careful. This one is fragile.”

“Do I need to sign anything?” I questioned.

“Oh yeah, one minute, and I’ll get those directions for you too.”

With the form signed, my truck loaded, and directions in hand, Melinda and I made our way to the furniture store across town.

“So, Dad, what do you think you’ll need?” she questioned, looking at the first dining room set we came to.

“Well, to be honest, I’m going to need everything.” I shrugged. “I sold everything before I left, aside from what I gave to you.”

“Everything? Dad, you must have something?”

“No, I need everything. Hope you’re ready to pick out some things.”

Melinda took a seat at a table, pulling out a notepad and pen from her purse. She clicked the pen twice, then looked up at me. “All right. Just tell me what you need or the rooms you have, the style you’d like, and I’ll make a list and we will go from there.”

Shopping turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. Between Melinda and the sales associate at the store, I had a completely furnished home. It felt good to have that weight off my shoulders.

“Did you want to grab a quick bite with your old man?” I questioned as we drove down the main street of Cedar Landing, back toward Willow Valley.

“Sure, we could try that little fish and chip hut we passed on the way in if you like. I’ve heard they have great food, and I’ve always wanted to try it. I don’t normally get out this way too much.”

“Sounds good,” I replied, turning into the parking lot that held the little fish and chip hut.

Once we got our food, we took a seat at a small picnic table that was placed under a tree at the edge of the parking lot. The pair of us opened our cans of soda at the same time and took a sip.

“Things going better now with Peggy?” Melinda asked.

It was as if she knew. “I actually wanted to speak to you about something that involves Peggy,” I said as Melinda dipped a fry into the small container of ketchup.

“Oh.”

“I want to know how you feel about her?”

Melinda looked at me and shrugged. “I’ve told you, Peggy is a wonderful lady. Why do you ask? Is it not working out?”

I chuckled. “Quite the opposite. For the past month or so, I’ve been helping her with some renovations at her place. It’s really run-down.”
