The moment the doors opened, we stepped into the lobby. She pointed to the couch in the middle of the room. Moping over, I perched gently on the center cushion. She disappeared into Jenna’s office. Seconds later, they emerged, and Jade remained in the doorway holding Dylan. He’d been coming to the club with them but was never allowed near the showroom during nighttime business hours.

“What happened?” Jenna sped to the sitting area, plopping down, wrapping her arms around me from the side.

“I’m okay.” I buried my face in my palms, leaning on my knees. “I—”

“You need more time, I know.” She pulled me tighter against her. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“He was with another woman and butt-dialed me.” Every emotion came pouring out. I rocked back and forth. “Why does it… hurt so bad, Jen? All I ever did was love him unconditionally. I can’t… take… it.”

Jade stepped over with a box of tissues, setting them on the coffee table. She snatched one out, handing it to me. Dylan peered down at me, concern in his bright, little brown eyes. God, he looked so much like his father it was uncanny.

“Thank you.” I sniffled, wiping my tears, then my nose.

“Come on,” Jenna took my hand, pulling me to her office.

Jade set Dylan on the floor with his toys before exiting the room and closing the door. Jenna sat behind her desk, removing her phone out of the top drawer. I knew what she was doing. I didn’t want her to, but I didn’t have the strength to stop her.

Remaining silent, I watched Dylan play with a plastic puzzle. Any other time, I would’ve gotten down on the floor and played with him.

As Jenna was leaving a voicemail for Chance, Ian stuck his head into the office, checking the floor for his son before he stepped in. He closed the door behind him. Dylan meandered to his dad, reaching his arms up. Ian picked him up, kissing his cheek before his gaze met mine. “Did you decide you needed more time to heal?”

“Chance.” Again, his name was all I could muster the strength to say. Repeating it made me relive the moment all over again.

“What did he do?” He bounced his squirming son for a moment before placing another kiss on his cheek, then setting him down to play.

“Chance was with,” Jenna snapped, before her voice dropped to a whisper, “another girl.”

Sliding his hands into his pockets, Ian stared at the upper corner of the room, gnawing the inside of his cheek.

Jenna continued to repeatedly call Chance. “I know he’s single b—”

“He’s hurting too,” Ian mildly defended before he let out a deep breath, focusing his attention on me. “I’m not in any way condoning his actions, but he’s running from his heart and is acting out.”

Jenna stepped around to the front of the desk. “Acting is what he does best, and I’m pissed!”

Turning to her with a confused expression, I sniffled, wiping my nose. “What do you mean?”

“There has to be an explanation for it. I don’t buy that he’s over you or will ever be.”

That was the last thing I remembered about the conversation before I sprinted out of the room and into a nearby bathroom. I needed to cry hard and didn’t want to scare their son. I dropped to the floor, drawing my knees into my chest, wailing for I don’t know how long.

At some point, Jenna and Jade forced me to leave the restroom, and I spent the night at the Knight’s Brookline mansion in a guest room.

“What do you think, Amber?”

“Huh?!”

“Pizza and game night tonight?” Ian folded his arms over his chest, perching on the edge of the family room couch. He was so different when he wasn’t inbusinessmode.

I nodded, meeting his gaze, mumbling, “Anything but Jenga.”

The corner of his lip twitched as if he were trying to hide a smirk, but he cleared his throat, diverting his attention elsewhere.

“I would love to play a game with you.” Alejandro peeked up at me and smiled. A lock of his cappuccino hair curled into one of his honey eyes. “Are you competitive?”

“It depends.” I shrugged, the memories of Chance and me flooded my mind once again.

His gaze returned to the file he was buried in. Jenna hooked her arm in mine, escorting me out of the room. “Let’s get you some water.”
