Amber’s there?

Yeah, she is but Chan—

Let me speak to her.

She became silent. It was then I knew I did a bad thing. Fuck.

Jen? Let me speak to Amber, please.I did my best to keep cool.

Sighing, I heard the creaking of a door close on the other end.

You butt-dialed her when you were screwing another woman last night, she hissed. I could tell she had cupped her hand around her mouth so no one would hear her.

Oh shit. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath.Jenna, fuck, I didn’t have—

Chance, just give her some space right now, okay? You really hurt her.

I didn’t fuck anyone, I—

Chance! Listen to me. You’re single. You can do whatever you want, and you know I love you. But you really crushed her last night. You need to understand how bad you’re hurting everyo—

I have to go, Jen. I’m on set now. I lied, trying to escape the conversation. I wanted to get off the call as soon as possible.

Okay, love you and let’s talk later tonight, okay? We’ll video chat! She was attempting to sound excited as she stepped back into the room with the others. I heard Ian muttering in the background.

Yeah, I mumbled,love ya too.

Jaw clenched, I hung up. I couldn’t believe I’d just destroyed the only woman who ever meant anything to me romantically. She would never forgive me for this. I didn’t know if I should give up on her and just live life as I did before her, try to patch things up, or at the very least, be friends. A sick feeling crept into the pit of my stomach.

NO AIR

AMBER

My empty gaze averted to the floor when I realized Jenna was on the phone with Chance. Immediately, I had a flashback of the night before. My entire world was crumbling all over again.

“Amber?” I heard a voice behind me. “Are you okay?”

Jade rested her hand on my back, circling my shoulder blade with her palm. I wanted to control my emotions but, in that moment, it was the last thing on my mind. My heart was broken, but it still longed for Chance. He was single and could do whatever he wanted, although it was still painful.

“Chance.” It was all I could utter through my tears.

“Let’s go upstairs.” She tugged my hand.

“I’m okay.” I sniffled.

“Amber,” she sighed, “clearly, you are the opposite of okay.”

Slowly, I stood with her help, my legs still too weak to fully support me.

“Is that yours?” She pointed to my belongings.

I nodded.

“I got it.” Bending over, she tucked the things into my bag, zipped it, then slipped it on her shoulder.

Everything was a blur, but I blindly followed her to the elevator. I wept quietly in the corner, my gaze locked on the floor as we ascended to the executive offices. I was doing my best to calm down before Ian and Jenna saw me. Low music played overhead, and I sang the lyrics in my mind to fight off what I’d just heard. It was no use.
