The driver? The girls? They were in on it. They had to be. It was starting to sink in. It was all a set-up. It appeared normal at the time. Alejandro had been planning everything for a while. He’d caused everything. We all had targets on our backs. His plan was to destroy us all.

Tom punched in the code to the gate, coming to a halt in front of my home. Amber got ready to jump out, but I grabbed her, tangling my fingers in her hair as I pulled her to my lips in a passionate kiss. Taken by surprise, she moaned. The back door opened. I reluctantly peeled myself away, helping her out of the car.

“What’s the rush, Mr. Hardwin?” Tom smiled.

“My hot girlfriend.” I winked, hoping he’d go away.

“Yeah.” Uncertainty daubed his face. He shook his head with a sneer. “Yes, of course. You kids have fun.”

Amber and I kept a normal pace so suspicion wasn’t raised as we ascended the steps to the front door. While entering the code, I heard the limo drive away. I closed the door, blowing out all my breath as I leaned my head back on the wooden door.

“Chance! What’s going on?” Amber whispered as if someone could hear us.

“We have to get home now!”

Marching through the house to my office, I yanked the desk chair back, throwing myself into the seat. I flung open my laptop, staring at the screen. Running my fingers through my hair, I racked my brain trying to figure out how we would sneak away.

A commercial flight would be too conspicuous. Someone would end up posting a live video of us on social media. I couldn’t risk it. A private plane might end up having a direct attack on it.

“Tell me what’s going on.” Amber folded her arms over her stomach, tucking herself into a seat facing my desk.

“I don’t want to bring up the past that hurt you so badly, but this is tied to it.”

“I can take it.”

She sat silently as I pulled a cigarette out of my pocket, lighting it. Scrolling through flight options, I sighed, finding one leaving in three hours. I purchased three economy tickets. Two for us, one for Dragon. After entering my credit card info and booking the flight, I closed my laptop, pushing it to the middle of my desk. Propping my elbows on the surface, I buried my face in my palms, taking a deep breath.

“Chance.”

Dragging my hands off my face, I inhaled the cigarette. “Come here.” I held my hand out, sliding my chair out a bit.

She skipped over, sitting on my lap. “Am I hurting you?”

“No, baby.” I was too distracted to be in any pain.

“Good.” Throwing her arms around my shoulders, she leaned forward, kissing my forehead gently. “I want to help.”

Lifting my chin, I peered into her eyes, trying to hold my cigarette out of her face. Her nails massaged my scalp as she ran her fingers through my hair. My eyes focused on the emptiness of the room, and I ran the past events through my mind once again. I had to get us home safely, in the most inconspicuous way possible.

Taking a drag, I picked up my phone, pressing Luke’s name in my contacts. I exhaled to the side. He was taking forever to answer his phone, but I felt a sense of relief when it stopped ringing.

Chance, are you guys on the way home yet?

Booked a flight. I sighed.I hate to even ask this, but do you still have a brother in Calabasas?

Yeah, why?

We need a ride to the airport, and I’m scared to call a strange car service. I also don’t want to drive my cars because—

I’ll have him call you now.

With alarm in his tone, he didn’t bother to say goodbye, he simply hung up.

“Can I do anything?”

“We’re going to need disguises and I’m going to need you to remove your ring until we’re home.”

Nodding, she slid it off her finger without question.
