My blood ran cold at the sight of the six-foot tall, younger brother of my abusive ex.Ronnieee. I sighed. I knew Ian, Luke, and Mark had taken care of Brad, but I didn’t know the details. I shook my head. “Haven’t seen him in forever, actually.” I kept my cool, laying the tray back on the bar. “We broke up a long time ago.” I scanned the crowd for a bouncer before turning my attention back to him.

“Really?” He chuckled, narrowing his eyes on mine before becoming serious. “Because, you see, I think you had him killed!”

“You need to leave!” Ian’s voice commanded from over my shoulder.

I spun around on my heels to see Ian and Luke planted behind me, with Ice Man flanking Ian. Luke’s arms were crossed as he glared at Ronnie.

Ian was gnawing the inside of his cheek. “As I said, you need to leave my club.”

“I’m looking for my brother!”

“Well,” Luke shrugged, “he isn’t here.”

“Maybe he pissed off the wrong person,” Ian added.

“Fuck you guys!” Rage was now in Ronnie’s stare, a vein popping on his forehead. “I’m going to kill you all!”

Ian lifted his hand. Instantly, two of his other bodyguards appeared out of nowhere, seizing Ronnie. Luke stepped forward, reaching behind him, pulling out a gun from his waistband. He passed it off to Ice Man inconspicuously.

“I have family upstairs.” Ian told the guards. “Take him to the Blue Lounge. I’ll be right there.”

The bouncers nodded in unison, and Luke followed them out. I’d been around long enough to know Ronnie wasn’t leaving alive. Ian scanned the room, then brought his gaze to mine.

“I’m sorry.”

“Are you okay, Amber?”

Nodding, I trailed my fingertips up and down my arm. “Yes, I really am.”

“Alright.” He tucked his hands in his pockets. “I have to go handle that, but great job tonight.”

“Thank you.”

He disappeared into the crowd.

Following my shift, I went upstairs to meet Alejandro. The moment I pushed open the executive lobby door and stepped into the room, I was greeted with watchful eyes. My friends were all waiting.

“Oh my God!” Jade sprung to her feet from the couch. “Fantastic job tonight! You killed it!”

Warmth swelled in my cheeks. “Thanks.”

“Girl!” Jenna chimed in, bouncing Dylan on her hip. “Don’t even be shy about it. You rocked!”

“Thank you.” I giggled.

Alejandro took several strides toward me before sliding my bag off my shoulder and draping it over his own. “Are you ready?”

I nodded before exchanging a glance with both Jenna and Jade, who were watching closely. Jade was stifling a smile. Jenna didn’t try to hide her emotions. I knew she supported both Chance and me, but she was worried for us at the same time.

After saying goodbye to the others, small talk filled the void as Alejandro and I left the club. He’d been a gentleman, holding the car door open for me, then made sure to show me how to control the dual thermostat in his Benz before we left the parking lot. Chance had always just been able to read my mind and did everything for me, but Alejandro asked a lot of questions. He seemed overly considerate. It was a bit intimidating.

“I found a little place near here that’s open twenty-four hours.” He reached over, resting his hand on my thigh.

Startled, I tensed up. “Uh, yeah, that sounds good.”

Sensing he was making me nervous, he withdrew his palm, setting it on his own leg, keeping his eyes on the road. “Sorry, it’s just hard to keep my attention off you.”
