“You need to sleep too.” Wiping my tears and nose on the blanket, I choked back any other tears begging to escape.

“We’re going to wash the blanket when we get up, then we’re going to go to my house and talk.”

“Why are we going to wash the blanket?” I peeked back over my shoulder, confused.

He chuckled, “You just wiped your snotty, cute nose on it.”

Leave it to Chance to lighten every sad mood. As much as I wanted to cry, I wanted to laugh more. Unable to hold it in, I let out a small giggle, nuzzling my backside into his crotch. Clasping my arms against his, I pulled him tighter against me.

“Can you please take your pants off at least? Your jeans are hard.” Immediately, I regretted my statement.

“Sure.” He rolled away, removing his pants and underwear before holding me again.

“Wow,” I snickered.

“What?”

“You’re not even going to make a sarcastic remark about your dick?”

Pulling me even tighter against him, he sighed into my shoulder. “Rest, baby.”

Squeezing my eyes shut, I attempted to obey him. Leftover tears seeped through the dam of my eyelashes, creating a small wet spot on the pillow. But I was okay.

“Are you cold?” Chance reached over, rubbing my thigh gently for a moment as he stared ahead at the road.

“I’m okay.”

That was the only conversation we had on the way to his house, the place I called home shortly, until we broke up. I looked out the window as we neared his street. More tourists had flocked to the area for vacation, so the roads were a little busier.

The rows of multi-story, classic brownstone houses drew crowds from all over. Not only were prominent people living among the residences, but most of them were built in the eighteen-hundreds. Needless to say, the area had massive curb appeal to people from all over.

Instead of pulling into the alley leading to a small parking area behind the house, he drove to the front. Finding an empty spot next to his home, he parallel parked against the curb perfectly.

“Ready?”

Glancing out the window, I gazed up at the tall structure, remembering the last time I was here. Nodding, I placed my hand on the handle, but Chance reached out, resting his on my leg. Startled, I jumped, twisting to face him.

“I got it.” Hopping out of the car, he hurried to my side, opening the door. He held his hand out and beamed. “Been a while, huh?”

A tight-lipped smile inched onto my face. Placing my palm in his, I stepped onto the sidewalk. “It has.”

Several people walked between us and the staircase leading up to his front door. Whispers as they passed by made it evident, they recognized him, but thankfully, didn’t stop. He closed the car door before placing his arm around me, escorting me to the entrance. As he unlocked the door, I scanned the area, blinking nervously.

“Amber?”

“What?” I spun on my heels to see the door open.

“Are you coming?” He flashed a grin, holding the doorknob as he stood inside. “You’ve been standing out there in your own world for a few minutes.”

“Oh.” I murmured, hurrying into the foyer. “Sorry.”

“Living room or den?” He gestured in the direction of each room. “Your pick.”

“Den is fine.” Rolling my eyes, I led the way to the family room. “Did you have the place painted?” I commented on the new jade-green color as we made our way down the hall to the casual room.

“Yeah, a while back.”
