“I’ll text him. For now—”

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

The door crept open, and Jenna peeked in. “Are you guys hungry?”

“What?” Ian blinked rapidly, checking his watch. “Shit! It’s 7 a.m.” He strode to her side. Wrapping his arm around her waist, he pulled her against him, placing a kiss on the top of her head. “Sorry, I didn’t realize it was so late, or early.”

Smiling, she circled her growing stomach with her hand, as she often did when her baby was kicking. “It’s okay. You guys should all come eat, then sleep. Ian and I have to go to the doctor soon.”

“I’m going to go get some rest.” Sliding past her, I pulled her into my side for a quick hug as I passed.

“Chance,” she murmured as I stepped into the hall.

“Yeah?”

“Amber slept over, just so y—”

“I know, Jen.” I turned to walk away.

“Wait, are you guys bac—”

“Goodnight, Jennifer!”

“Baby, let him go to bed,” Ian muttered.

I couldn’t wait to lie next to Amber. It’d been way too fucking long. Coming to the bedroom door, I breathed deeply, gripping the doorknob. My knuckles turned white as I leaned my forehead on the wooden frame.

I was home. The only thing separating Amber and I was a few steps. Earlier, my adrenaline was controlling me. Now it was real. We still needed to strip away the layers of our breakup, but I wanted nothing more in the world right now than to hold her. I wanted to tell her I loved her, never letting her go.

I crept into the room, closing the creaking door as gently as I could. I slid my phone out of my pocket, silencing the ringer, laying it on the nightstand. The only light in the room was the charging of her cell phone. The thick navy curtains were closed, canceling out any trace of sunlight.

Faltering to my side of the bed, I was careful not to trip over the one chair that seemed to jump out at everyone in the dark. Pulling my shirt over my head, I balled it up before letting it fall to the floor. I tugged the blanket and sheet back, I was about to remove my pants when I heard a shifting on the bed.

AMBER

“Chance?” I woke to a noise next to the bed. Groggily, I flickered my eyes open, wiping any remnants of sleep out of them.

“Yeah baby, it’s me.”

Propped on an elbow, I turned to the bedside table, twisting on the lamp. Squinting in the light, I realized I wasn’t dreaming any longer. He was breathtaking in every way.

An evil smirk crept over his face as he unbuttoned his jeans and crawled onto the bed. Leaning over me, he placed a hand on each side of my head while he, what I can only describe as, eye fucked me. Lowering his face to mine, he brushed his lips against mine. “I can’t believe you’re real.”

Then… I don’t know what happened. Maybe it was this room, and the fact Alejandro had entered a while back, after I had a dream about Chance. Maybe it was what Chance did in California. Maybe I was overly tired. Maybe it was just me being insecure because of everything that had gone on between us. Tears welled inside my eyes. I squeezed my eyelids closed and sobbed uncontrollably.

“Hey, hey” Chance repositioned, lying next to me and draping his arm over my chest. Stroking my cheek, he tried to turn my face toward him. “Baby, don’t cry, please.”

I couldn’t speak. I could only weep. Was it ridiculous? I have no idea. Emotions flooded me, and I couldn’t control my reaction. I knew until we got everything out in the open, we’d never be able to move on from this.

“We’re about to discuss it, aren’t we?” He twisted a strand of my hair around his finger.

Cupping my eyes, I nodded. “I hate that we’re not communicating anymore.”

“Do you want to get some sleep before we do?” He peeled my hands away from my face, wiping my tears with his thumb. “We can go to my house and talk so no one can hear us in case you want to yell.”

Shaking my head, I whimpered, “I don’t want to yell at you.” And I didn’t. I loved him more than anything. I wanted to be past all of it as soon as possible.

“Baby, come here.” He didn’t even remove his jeans as he got under the blanket and pulled me back into his body. “Please rest and let’s talk once you’ve gotten some sleep.”
