“I can take you,” he grinned widely, “get in.”

Hurrying, I ran to the car, sliding in and slamming the door a little too hard with the force of the wind. As I buckled my seatbelt, I realized what I’d just done. I got into the car with Alejandro, the one guy Chance couldn’t stand.

“Lucky, I saw you, huh?” Grinning, he glanced over quickly, before gluing his gaze on the road.

Arching a brow at him, I knitted my brows. “Why were you in the area, anyway?”

“I told you, preciosa, I’m staying at the four seasons.”

Slightly suspicious, I busied myself on my phone. A part of me wanted to text Chance, but I was too upset. Talking about things was exactly what we needed to do, but I let my emotions get the best of me.

CHANCE

I couldn’t stop her from leaving. Frozen in my foyer, I stared stupidly at the floor while she walked out the door. My heart ached. Is this how she felt when I broke up with her last Christmas? I wouldn’t wish this feeling on anyone. There was no way I was going to let her hurt because of me ever again.

I took off out the door, slamming it behind me. I stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking up and down the long sidewalk, lined with trees. Pivoting toward the closest subway station, I ran, hoping to catch her in time before she got on the T.

Rounding the corner, I saw her in the distance, circling her hands frantically around her head. I wasn’t sure if she was swatting away a bee or trying to tame her long, silky locks of hair. Inhaling deeply, I mustered up everything in me to get her attention.

“AMBER!” I yelled as loud as my lungs would allow. “Note to self. Stop fucking smoking.”

I raced down the sidewalk toward her. She didn’t hear me. A car pulled over to the curb, and she talked with them shortly before jogging over and diving in. I wasn’t able to tell who was driving because I was still too far away, but I took note that the car had a New York license plate as it turned on the very next road.

“Alejandro,” I fumed. Digging my phone from my pocket, I called Luke.

Hey, what’s up?He answered in a hushed tone.I’m in a meeting.

Can you meet me alone after?

Yeah, but why?

It’s about what you said about Alejandro, I growled.

Oh, that. Yeah, let’s talk after my meeting. I’ll call you in a couple of hours.

* * *

Luke had gotten called into a couple meetings after our call, but finally had about thirty minutes to spare before opening the club. We met at the warehouse Ian had bought for underground fighting. When I arrived in front of the dark red brick building, Luke was pacing back and forth in front of a big, black open garage door.

Waving me forward, he stepped to the side as I drove my red Mercedes into the building to conceal it. He closed the door, then strode to where I was. Leaning on the driver’s side, I lit a cigarette.

“Now, what’s going on?” he asked.

“Amber’s spendingwaytoo much time with him. I don’t trust him or like him.” I inhaled another drag. “And before you say anything, for fuck’s sake, it’s not jealousy. There’s something about that guy that rubs me the wrong way.”

Bobbing his head in agreement, he took a long drag of his own cigarette. The aroma of burning tobacco wafted through the air as we both smoked in silence for a few moments. Luke was bothered. He only smoked when he was upset.

“If my intuition about him is right,” the grey cloud drifted from his lips, “we have areallybig problem.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t want to say just yet. Ian trusts him. You know how he can be about trust.”

“Yeah, loyal as fuck.” I sighed. “Which is normally good, but right now it could be a problem.” Breathing in the potent tobacco, I shook my head. “But you and Ian are like brothers. He wouldn’t choose him over you.”

“No, but he will stand up for him and try to get me on his side, which could cause another problem if Alejandro got wind of it.”

“So, what do we do?”
