Gently tugging the lowest drawer open, I knelt down, locating the letter M. “What’s the second letter?”

“I.” he muttered, wandering back and forth behind me, his fingers pinching his temples.

“I promise I’ll find it.” Anxiously, I delved through the infinite manilla sleeves, hopeful that I unintentionally shoved it in another while in a hurry.

“Amber, if that document is lost, I’m ruined.”

“I said I’ll find—”

“What’s wrong?” Ian sprung forward. “What is that?” He leaned over my crouched body.

“A note.” I picked it up.

“No shit!” Huffing, he snatched it from my fingers.

I stood, scrunching my face. “What does it say?” Leaning forward, I tried to see, but it was written in a foreign language.

“Scacco matto.” Pursing his lips, he lifted his gaze, but soon, his eyes transformed to a black stare, and he froze.

“Ian?”

“I need you to get out. Immediately.”

“What does that mean?”

“Amber,” Tightening his glare on me, he clenched his jaw, “I need you to get out.”

Before I could respond, he stomped to his desk, snatching his phone off the surface. I hurried out of the room, closing the door as softly as it would allow. Luke was perched on Jade’s desk, leaning over whispering to her, but they both froze, staring when I rested my back on one of the double doors.

“What’s wrong?” Luke’s happiness diminished.

“You need to maybe speak—”

The door yanked open, and I stumbled back, falling against Ian.

He caught me. “What the hell, Amber?!”

“Sorry.” I yelped, hurrying into Jenna’s office, closing the door.

“Luke, get in here now!” Ian bellowed from the lobby.

“What’s going on?” Jenna shot up out of her seat, holding her stomach.

“Are you okay?” Speeding over to her side, I held her arm.

“Yeah, I’m just…ouch…have to get through a couple more months.” She sighed, sitting back in her seat. “This girl is already kicking butt and taking names, though. What’s my crazy husband yelling about now?”

Unsure if I should say anything or not, I rolled my eyes.

“Is it about the warehouse?”

Nodding sheepishly, I sat in the chair in front of her desk. “I guess, anyway. The file is missing and there was a note in the place of it.”

“What did it say?!” Her eyes widened.

“It was in Italian, I think?” I shrugged. “Ian seems pissed.”

She stood again, striding to the door and poking her head out. “Jade, will you come watch Dylan for a second?”
