I met Amber at the bottom of the stairs, placing my hands on her backside as we ascended to the second floor and down the long hallway to our usual bedroom. Closing the door and locking it, I leaned back, sliding my hands into my pockets. She spun to me with tears in her eyes. I wrapped my arms around her tightly.

She lost control of her emotions, sobbing into my chest. “Why is he targeting me?”

“I have no idea, baby.” I exhaled. “I wish I had that answer.”

“I mean, I don’t want him targeting anyone else either but my house?” She choked through her sobs. “I worked my ass off, making sure I had everything I needed or wanted for my own place. It was the first place I ever had to myself.” She had moved in with me almost instantly after leaving her abusive ex-boyfriend. She never left, until we broke up.

“I’ll fix this.Wewill fix this.”

As sweet as Amber was, she was also determined to never be a victim. When we were together, it was neveryouorI. It was us. We were a team and conquered everything together.

Backing away, she removed her clothes, leaving them on the floor next to the bed. She slid under the blankets, tugging them up to just below her chin. Turning away, she sighed audibly. “Goodnight, I love you.”

I removed my clothes, draped them on the chair, then sat on the edge of the bed. There was so much I wanted to say, but I didn’t want to overwhelm her.

AMBER

I felt a weight on the bed, inching closer to me from behind. Bending over, he placed a kiss on my cheek. “I’m going to go shower and will be right to bed.”

Everything in me wanted to respond, but I stared at the window, processing the series of events once again. I’d never understand what I did, that was so wrong. There was no way this could’ve been tied to my ex, Brad. No one cared about him other than his family. He was a terrible person who couldn’t keep a job because of his attitude and alcohol addiction. He sat at home all day, drinking.

I never told Chance, but I was pregnant before. When Brad found out, he beat me for hours. I cried myself to sleep that night. The following day, I woke up, noticing the signs of miscarriage. I was then physically mistreated for the blood on the bed too. Since he assumed I worked at Walmart, he insisted I replace the sheets before he went to sleep that night.

As much as those days and nights with him killed me, it made me so much stronger. I didn’t let it control me. Not that a man would ever define me, but I had a great one now. I loved Chance unconditionally.

As I drifted off, deep in thought, I once again felt his weight on the bed, sliding under the blanket and sheet, pulling me back against his body. I wiped any remnants of my tears. Turning over, I wrapped my leg around him, resting my head on his chest.

“I think we should look at the house.” He stroked my arm with his fingertips.

When I lifted my head, he was gazing at me with a wide grin painted on his face. It was hard to be sad when he wore that contagious expression. “The one behind them?”

“Mmhmm, what do you think?”

Snickering, I placed my hand on his. “Are we ready for that?”

“I hope so because we’re about to be homeless,” he snorted, “and I love our friends, but I don’t want to live with them. It’s weird as fuck. We need our own space.”

“You’re wrong about one thing.” I rolled my eyes, taking a deep breath. “I’m already homeless.”

“Nope.” He shook his head.

“What do you mean,nope?”

“You have a permanent residence in my whole heart.” He beamed. “It’s a mansion just for you.”

“Oh my God.” I giggled. “I don’t know if that was the cheesiest thing you’ve ever said or the most romantic.”

He pulled me against his front. “All I know is I want to live with you wherever.” Suddenly, his cheerful expression was replaced by seriousness. “We’ve done it once already, and we didn’t kill each other.”

“Not physically.” I sniffled again.

“You have my word I will not hurt you again.” He cupped my jaw in his palm, kissing my head. “I told you before, I’m not going anywhere.”

“Let’s do it.”

He caught one of my tears on his thumb before pressing his lips to mine. Our tongues danced while he slid his hand down my side. Gasping through our kiss, I wound my hips, grinding against his growing cock. His hand caressed my skin as he snaked it around to my back, digging his fingers into my rear.

Over and over, he guided my body, pushing himself against me harder with each thrust. Slipping himself inside my wet center, he entwined his fingers in my hair, yanking my head back. He broke the kiss, attacking my neck with his hungry mouth. Moans filled the room as we lay on our sides, entangling our bodies together.
