He pulls his hand back when I don’t take it. “Uh, come on, Allie. We can finish this conversation later.”

Awkwardly, slowly, and so, so carefully, I follow him out of the classroom. I struggle and clench my thighs together as everything slowly drips out of me. I have never been so afraid of someone seeing something fall out from between my legs.

Harry watches me with concern. “Allie, are you okay?”

Hell no. “Mhm,” I smile and nod.Just smile and nod, Allie. Everything will be just fine. What’s a little bit of semen?

It’s on my thigh. I probably look like someone with a stick physically up their butt while I walk on wooden legs. Once I make it out of the door, I barely relax.

Lucas, however, thinks life is a ball and just freaking funny. “You have no idea the things I refrained from sharing with that man,” he tells me. Lucas snorts when my jaw drops.

“Like what?”

“Things that would make you blush.”

“I can’t believe you.”

He snickers like this is just the grandest thing. Meanwhile, I’m trying to keep the floodgates closed. “Come on,” he grabs my hand and the butterflies come back to life. “I can’t wait to have you all to myself.”

We get back to the office with a few minutes to spare before his meeting. John isn’t here, but there is a note on my desk that Lucas picks up.

“What is it?”

He frowns, reading it and shoves it in his pocket. “Nothing. I’ll take care of it.”

“It was on my desk.”

“It’s for me, Allie.”

That’s weird.

He shoves his hands in his pockets, and I feel like we’re back in Mr. Hoover’s class, like he might try something else now. He has that same look on his face, like he means to start trouble.

“That booster party thing is this weekend.”

“Saturday.” I should probably think about what to wear.

“If I said I didn’t want you dancing or going with anyone else, would you go with me?”

“Are you asking me on an actual date, Lucas-freaking-Kennedy? I have your baby, we have sex, you tell me you love me, and then you ask me out for real?”

“We don’t do anything right, Allie, but we’re making it right in our own way. I’ll pick you up and do the whole gentleman bit. We’ll dance or whatever the fuck they do at this thing and hopefully eat. Maybe you’ll agree to come home with me for the night.” He clears his throat. “I can’t promise perfection, but I can promise I’ll do whatever makes you happy.”

I mean, when he puts it that way.

“Just go easy on me. I’ve never had to try before, and I really don’t want to mess this up with you.”

It’s odd being here after the things he was saying to me fifteen minutes ago. Lucas Kennedy acts like he’s the one with something to lose here. He’s always so sure of himself, but this vulnerability creeps out every so often from the deepest parts of him.

“Just don’t hurt me, because I can’t take that.”

John walks in and our conversation is over. “Lucas, so good to see you.” John looks like he just went to get a tan. I won’t judge, though. He’s a great boss. Math meetings usually are his personal appointments.

He leads Lucas to his office. “So, what did you want to talk about?”
