My phone pings and I know who it is.

We spent the entire day together. My new friend, Lucas, who claimed to have feelings for me. My cheeks hurt from smiling today. He’s pretty funny and caring. I almost would have believed it was something more, but I think it’s just his personality. The real Lucas Kennedy.

He didn’t have to do what he did today. He changed the spare tire and had someone replace it for me while we were gone.

And then the spa.

I feel good tonight, and Ted is kind of bringing me down with his behavior. I have to be honest with him, though. I kissed Lucas. Well, more than that, and it isn’t fair to keep it from him. The guilt is eating away at me, and I just want it settled.

My phone pings again, and I jump. Right.

Lucas:He cancel yet?

Jerk.

Allie:No.

Lucas:That’s a shame. Someone just had fifteen pizzas delivered to my house, and I figured you were hungry and there was trouble in paradise.

He got them.

Lucas:It’s by pure luck that I happen to be hungry and needed something to bring tomorrow for the fireworks.

Right… forgot about that.

Allie:Katrina coming?

Gosh, I hope not. I couldn’t possibly look her in her murderous eyes after everything she said and did.

Lucas:She has other plans.

Thank goodness. I have to put my phone down and finish deciding what to wear. In all seriousness, I have a date to finish getting ready for.

Dad calls me downstairs when Ted gets here.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Jadon is in his arms, happy as ever to see him. I’m reminded of why he’s important to me. He’s always been there for me and for Jadon. He’s not a bad guy.

He deserves the forgiveness I’m hoping for in return.

After one hell of an explanation.

His mouth is in a flat line. “Allie.” He exercises a throat-clearing while Jadon is wrapped around his neck. “You look incredible.”

Of course I do. I feel incredible. I look lesstired-young-motherand more like a relaxed and enjoyable young person. “Thank you.”

He kisses Jadon on the head and sets him on the floor. Jadon and I have a secret handshake. Rather, he makes them up randomly but insists we do them when he remembers. They’re always different.

After I fumble through his latest one, Dad takes him and kisses me goodnight. They’ll be asleep before I get home.

The walk to his car is humid after the random downpour today, and just uncomfortable.

When do I tell him what I did?

“And happy birthday.” He stops midway to the car, awkwardly leaning as if to hug me before backing out of it. When I think he’s going to kiss my cheek, he backs out of that, too.

“Um…”
