“Would you like to touch them?” he asked.

On a nod, I walked slowly towards him. He stood perfectly still as I strolled around to face his back. My fingers traced where wing met flesh and he shuddered. I stopped.

“Does that hurt?”

“No. Your touch is driving me wild. But don’t stop.”

Was that a plea I heard in his voice?

My hands continued their journey, and I gently stroked the feathers which were so soft. I’d never seen anything so amazing in my life.

“Can you put them away?”

And just like that, I watched as they disappeared inside his skin. I walked round to face him.

“Are you an angel?”

“Kind of. I’m half angel, half vampire. We’re called Hybrids.”

I gasped. “Um, don’t laugh, but my next question will be a little weird.”

He chuckled. “I’ve heard some batshit crazy things in my life. You won’t shock me.”

“Are you like… evil? You know, you suck your victim’s blood and they become a member of the walking dead. Or are you the good, sparkly kind because you’re a mix of the two species?”

He threw back his head and laughed.

“Hey, no laughing. My sanity is hanging by a thread here.”

I was disappointed when he put his T-shirt back on.I could look at the view all day.Hell, I needed to do something about my thoughts. He grinned.

“Hey, keep out of my thoughts.”

He laughed and kissed my forehead. “It’s not my fault you’re broadcasting them so loudly.” His laughing subsided. “We’re nothing like the species you see on TV or read about in books. I was once a vampire but then took angel blood to make me a Hybrid. We all have territories on Earth, which we patrol to keep supernaturals and humans safe.”

“From demons?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

I rubbed my head. “I can’t even believe I’m considering all this, but was it a demon in my head?”

“It was. His name’s Gustav.”

“And why would he be lurking in my head? What have I ever done to piss him off so bad that he’d want to kill me? Actually, was he behindeverything elsethat’s happened to me lately?”

“He was to blame for it all, yes.”

I waited for him to say more. A pained expression shrouded his face. He looked guilty as sin. What the actual… The thought of thisthingcontrolling me, Antoine’s matter-of-fact words, not to mention the terrible losses I’d suffered, pushed me over the edge. My brain was working double time now.

“There’s more to this, isn’t there? Something you’re nottelling me. And what would that be?” I asked, my teeth gritted.

“It’s because he wanted to prevent us from meeting.”

My head swivelled so fast I must have looked like the woman possessed inThe Exorcist.

“And whyin the name of God would henotwant us to meet, Antoine?”

“You’re my fated mate. Destined to be with me forever. If we join, we can take down the demon and end his existence. If one of us dies before we join, the other will follow a few days later. That’s why he wants you dead.”
