I wasn’t certain I liked the sound of that. “Does it hurt?”

A secret smile covered her lips. “No, not at all. It’s very… very intense.”

My mind was running riot with images of Antoine, his fangs buried in my neck, and my body reacted.

“By the expression on your face, you don’t seem averse to the idea.”

I blushed. “When that happens, will that be the conversion?”

“Oh, no. That’s only the start. But it’s not up to me to tell you more. That’s for you and Antoine to discuss, but I will tell you one thing.”

She paused to stare at me. I felt like she was reading each thought I’d ever had.

“What,” I urged her.

“It’s an out-of-this-world experience that you won’t want to miss.” She took one of my hands. “Please think about this, Donna. I know you have many more questions, but reconsider leaving Antoine. Your life with him would be better than you ever could imagine. And he’s hurting for you, so very much.”

A wave of sadness engulfed me. There was fear and confusion too. I doubled over, clutching at my stomach.

“What do you feel?” she asked, putting her hand on my shoulder.

“Pain and sadness. Regret, fear, and so much more.”

“You’re getting closer. Those emotions will be Antoine’s. I know he regrets everything that’s happened and he wants to help you. Remember, he’s never been through this before. It’s all new to him too. Being fated mates is final. There will never be anyone else for either of you.”

We stood again and she led me back towards Antoine’s home with a sigh.

“What’s wrong?”

“I have twin sons, Luca and Salvatore. They’re Antoine’s best friends.” She paused. “They’ve been searching for their mate too. I just hope they find her soon.”

“Mate? Surely, you mean mates?”

“No. They’re twins and share everything. They will share one mate, if they ever find her.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that. Dealing with one guy would be difficult enough, but two?

We came to a halt outside the living room balcony door. “We will leave you now. I wanted to tell you more, but Lorenzo and I must go and deal with a problem. I’ll always be at the end of the phone if you need to reach out.”

She hugged me close to her; there was more than just warmth seeping from her. I sensed a gentle healing wash over me, chasing away my doubts and fears. This was a woman I felt I could be close to.

She cupped my face between her hands, her eyes searching mine. “We will be close, Donna. And remember, Gustav is the cause of your pain. You, Antoine, and your loved ones are collateral damage. Victims of an evil demon.”

“Can we really kill him?”

“Yes. You and Antoine together. But you must be fully mated. There’s one other thing. Be with him because you want just that, to be his and he yours. Do not do it only to seek vengeance.” Her words were deadly serious.

I believed every word she said. Somehow, I’d get through this. No, Antoine and I would get through this. Together. And as I thought those words, I felt an almost audible click inside my mind. A kind of understanding.

“See.” She smiled. “It’s already happening.”

We were about to enter the living room when I held back. She arched her brows in question.

“There’s just one more thing I’d like to ask you.”

“Fire away.”

“Would Antoine and I have found our way to each other without all this tragedy? Sorry, that sounds stupid now I’ve said it out loud.”
