“Not stupid at all. Yes, I do believe you would. Love is a powerful emotion, more so than our other powers. Somehow, you’d have found your way to one another.”

When we went back inside, only Antoine and Lorenzo were there. I caught the scent of a barbecue and my stomach immediately responded with a grumble. Lorenzo stood and made his way towards me. He was over six feet tall, well-built, with short black hair and a neatly trimmed goatee beard. His eyes were brown, so dark that they were almost coal black. The way he gazed at Isabella made me feel as if I’d witnessed what should’ve been a private moment between the two of them. It was the way his eyes had softened when they landed on her, and a tender smile formed on his lips.

“Thank you for helping to save me, Lorenzo,” I said in a low voice.

“It was our pleasure to help you discover your way back to Antoine, Donna.”

I was aware of Antoine’s eyes on me, but I was too afraid to look in his direction. What kind of mate would he think I was after all I’d said to him?

“The perfect one,”he whispered like a caress in my mind.

I glanced at him then. My goodness, he watched me with as much intensity in his eyes as Lorenzo had when he studied Isabella. And his gentle smile had my insides warming, along with my heart.

“We must leave now,” Lorenzo said. “Please apologise to Mac. As much as we love barbecues, there are other things we need to attend to. Viktor is causing some difficulty in our sons’ territory. We will see you both soon. But for now, you have much to discuss.”

As they stepped through the doors, I watched Lorenzo take off his shirt and fix it into the waistband of his trousers. I wondered if Isabella would do the same, but it appeared there were splits in her clothing, allowing her wings to come through. They flew gracefully up into the sky and promptly disappeared.

“It’s part of our abilities to render ourselves invisible, especially when we fly.” Antoine moved to stand next to me.

“We need to talk, Antoine.”

He stroked one of my cheeks and my eyelids fell of their own volition. “Yes, we do. But we need to eat first. Mac and Jeanie are desperate to see you again.” He smiled.

“Can you eat, then?” I asked.

A chuckle rumbled from him. “You really need to forgeteverythingyou’ve seen or heard about vampires and angels, Donna.”

My stomach growled its protest.

“Now come.” He took my hand in his, which felt surprisingly warm. He squeezed it gently. “And that’s another thing you need to forget. We’re warm-blooded creatures.”

I’ve got such a lot to work through,I thought.

“Yes, you have. But we’ll work it all out together.”

ChapterSeven

Antoine

Watching Donna on the beach with Isabella stressed me out. I tried not to invade her mind. I needed to gain her trust and snooping wasn’t going to help. Mac and Jeanie had gone out to sort some lunch, leaving me pacing the room while Lorenzo studied me closely.

“Walking up and down won’t change the situation.”

I came to a stop and studied the father of my best friends. He was on the Hybrid council, a very important position. Watching him now, he looked laidback and casual, just like his sons. He’d never give the impression that he had life and death decisions to make.

“I don’t know what else to do. I feel useless, Lorenzo. I’m used to being in control. This is unsettling.”

“How do you think Donna feels about all of this? Her whole world has imploded. Spectacularly.”

He was right, of course. Being out of control was giving me anxiety and a headache, even though I couldn’t suffer physically from them. Not usually, anyway.

“What do you reckon they’re talking about?” I stared out in their direction.

Lorenzo joined me, chuckling. “Knowing my lovely mate, complaining about men.”

I wanted to laugh, but my head was still full of Donna’s hateful words. A hand landed on my shoulder.

“She will come round, you know. The pull is like nothing else in this world. Think of two magnets, the force of gravity bringing them together. It’s a powerful, unstoppable force.”
