I only hoped what he said was true. My emotions were shaky, and the need to have Donna close to me was just as Lorenzo had described it. Two magnets, unable to avoid the collision that would bring them together.

As I walked through my house with her a short while later, I was happy she allowed me to hold her hand. This I’d take as a small victory. I could hear Mac and Jeanie talking together in the garden.

“Oh, God. That smells so good.”

“Wait until you taste it. Mac is an awesome barbecue cook. Is there anything you don’t like eating?” This was one of many questions I needed to ask her.

“No, I love my food. I’m always willing to try new things.”

I wondered if she’d be so free in the bedroom, surrendering herself to passion. The image of her riding me, her hair cascading all around her, almost undid me. Her hand squeezed mine tightly and she gasped. When I looked at her, her pupils had blown.

“Did you hear what I was thinking?”

She nodded, swallowing loudly.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean for that to happen.”

Her cheeks were crimson. “That’s okay. It’s… only, I need to know more about all of this… this new life.”

“Sorry again, Donna.” I stopped in the kitchen by the back door. “My emotions are going crazy. I’ve been waiting literally for centuries for you to come into my life. I’m doing the best I can to hold them at bay. But, please.” I clasped her hand in what I hoped was a reassuring gesture. “You must believe me when I tell you that you’ll always be safe with me.”

A small smile ghosted her lips. “I know. And I’m trying too. Just remember I’m human and my world has fallen apart. Confused doesn’t even cover how I feel.”

“I understand. Now, let’s go eat.”

What I didn’t say was that we only had limited time for me to bring her fully into my world. The longer I put it off, the harder Gustav would try to kill us.

Donna

“I’ve never tasted anything so delicious,” I announced after my third plateful of food.

Mac was a wizard on the barbecue. Salmon marinated in a homemade, sweet chilli sauce, sausages in some smoky, sticky sauce, and slices of steak which were so tender they melted in the mouth.

“I’m glad you enjoyed it. Next time, I’ll do my burgers with caramelised onion, or maybe the ones I do with blue cheese.”

“Why choose? Do both, please.”

Everyone laughed, and I had to admit, this was the most chilled I’d felt in a long while. Perhaps even before I lost my parents. When I reflected on it, I’d always felt like something was missing from life. Antoine, maybe? Could it be possible that my soul knew about him even back then? And if that was the case, perhaps I was as much to blame for my parents’ death.

“I can feel your anxiety, Donna. Would you like to talk now?”

“I need to help clear up after this meal,”I protested.

“They won’t mind. In fact, they’ll want us to talk.”

I had to at least offer.

“Here.” I began clearing plates away. “Let me do this.”

Jeanie took the plates away from me. “That’s our job, love. You go and talk now.” She kissed the side of my cheek.

Antoine took my hand and led me back inside. He came to a halt and I walked into him.

“I’m not putting off our talk, but would you like to see the rest of my home?”

“That would be good.”
