My mind was in turmoil. Who the hell was Antoine? Maybe he was a crazy guy who wanted to kidnap me. Was he a mass murderer? Maybe it was a weird religious cult. Life for me was over, but I certainly didn’t want it to end this way. Nauseous and afraid, my body broke out in a cold sweat, making me shiver. I was only just managing to hold it together as it was. This new development was too much. My head felt like it was gripped in a vice.

I needed to get out, to run and never stop running. Throwing back the covers, I headed for the door. My desire to get out was paramount; I didn’t care that I only wore PJs. Jeanie attempted to catch my arm, but I brushed her aside. I threw open the door and ran into a solid wall of muscle. Two hands held me by the shoulders. My eyes travelled up the tight white T-shirt, which stretched over a well-toned chest. I noted his arms had thick, corded muscles, with various intricate tattoos covering them.

My eyes went further upwards until they came to a perfectly chiselled jaw with stubble on it. Firm but full lips caught my attention. Finally, I locked my gaze with the most amazing and intense ice-blue eyes. His hair was short and very deep brown, like the deepest darkest chocolate. The guy looked like he’d just walked out of a photoshoot for the cover of a men’s magazine.Wow.

I was aware of my body trembling in response to being held by such a gorgeous guy. My stomach clenched with desire so strong that I cried out loud. My nipples became taut, and wetness seeped from between my legs. His hands gripped me tighter, and his eyes deepened in colour until they were almost the shade of a dark, raging storm. My sight wavered and my legs wobbled, no longer able to hold me up. I leaned into the man who held me. His scent and the way his strong body pressed against mine made me dizzy with lust. There was something else too. He was powerful but held me like I was a fragile flower. My head spun a little faster as my emotions became too much.

When I came to, I was in the man’s arms and being carried somewhere. Jeanie was beside him, a look of concern in her expression as she worried at her lower lip. I struggled to get out of his arms. He only held me tighter. The thing that concerned me the most was my body’s reaction to him. I was so turned on that I was certain I’d spontaneously combust. I was finally placed on a large comfy sofa and swathed in a throw.

My reaction was to retreat away from this man to the edge of the sofa. I studied him from the relative safety at the other end of the seat. His brow was furrowed, eyes fixed on mine. His hands trembled as he clasped them together like he wanted to reach out for me.

The way his eyes had darkened had me squirming. There was lust in his expression, an emotion so intense that I whimpered. He reached out a hand towards me as if he was going to stroke my cheek. I recoiled, and he let his hand drop but continued to observe me.

“I’ve made some breakfast and tea. It’ll make you feel better.”

Another man had entered the room, and I caught the scent of bacon. My stomach growled loudly. The man smiled welcomingly at me. The woman went to his side and placed a kiss on his cheek.

“This is Mac. He’s my husband.”

I smiled at the man and then turned back to the one on the sofa. “Who are you?” I mumbled.

“I’m Antoine. I rescued you from the sea.” His voice was deep and rumbling, which caused havoc with my insides. “You almost died.” His words were said as though chastising me.

“I would say thank you, but you shouldn’t have bothered. Next time, leave me to rot.” Tears swam in my eyes as my predicament came back to me.

I wasn’t dead, just rescued by some good Samaritan who should have left me alone. I started to get up. With lightning speed, Antoine was next to me. He was so fast that I almost didn’t see him move. He gripped my shoulders again, his face close to mine. His breath was hot on my skin, his lips almost, but not quite, skimming mine. I closed my eyes, my lips parting to allow him to kiss me. I waited and waited, but nothing happened. My eyes opened to see him watching me closely.

“You cannot die. I won’t allow it. Not now that I’ve found you. I’ve searched too many centuries to let you go.” His voice was gruff with emotion.

What the hell did he mean by that? Looking around the room, I saw that Mac and Jeanie had left. I heard them talking in low voices, and the sound of crockery being moved filled the air, in what I perceived to be the kitchen. Now it was just the two of us, my heart raced. My vulnerability returned, and I wasn’t certain I was safe anymore now the other couple had left the room.

“What on Earth are you talking about?”

“What’s your name?” He ignored my question by asking one of his own.

“Donna.”

His hands moved from my shoulders to cup my cheeks. My trembling body gave away how he made me feel. If only my heart would stop thudding. His thumbs stroked my skin with slow, hypnotic movements. Perhaps this was how he subdued his victims, by luring them into a false sense of security. I waited for his demeanour to change, but it didn’t.

“Pretty name for a very beautiful lady.” His lips murmured the words against mine.

With what strength I had, I pushed at his solid chest. “I need to go.”

I got up and headed for the door. My head spun when I noted he was blocking my way. He’d done itagain.Maybe it was some designer drug, created to enhance speed. I gave a mental shrug. How on Earth did I know?

“What the hell? How did you…”

I didn’t get to finish my sentence. Before I had a chance to react, his lips crashed down onto mine and he kissed me. Hard. Without mercy. Rather than fight him, I grabbed the back of his head, pulling him closer to me. My mouth opened for him to dominate me further. His tongue lashed against mine. His burgeoning erection pressed against my belly. The kiss was unrelenting, and I welcomed it. This was the most alive I’d felt since my world had imploded around me a short while before. But I was in danger of losing myself to this man. A man I knew absolutely nothing about.

Panic set in and my head banged with a tension headache. I needed to get out of this surreal situation. Fast. With as much strength as I could manage, I pushed away from him. He staggered backwards, his eyes wild and his breathing erratic.

Thankfully, he didn’t fight me or try to grab for me. He allowed me the space, although he did capture my hand and lead me back to the sofa. Our loud breathing mingled together in the silence of the room.

Even though I knew I should run from this strange man, I wanted to know more. It was almost a compulsion to stay. I really was messed up. I took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly, rubbing at my temples.

“Why did you save me?” My voice was loud in the silence.

“Because you’re mine. And if you’d died, I’d have followed soon after.”
