“What do you mean by that? You’re not making any sense at all. And no one is another person’s possession. I’m notyours.I belong tome.”I shook my head at the absurdity of his response.

His expression was one of confusion, and he appeared to be struggling to explain himself. He screwed his eyes up, and he scratched at his chin.

“There’s so much I need to tell you. I’m not sure how to say it without you heading for the nearest police station.”

“If you don’t tell me, then I may as well leave. I’m confused enough as it is,” I started to get up.

He placed a hand on my arm. “It’s not safe for you to leave here without my protection.”

He seemed so sincere about this. His whole manner had changed, and he held my eyes with a serious expression, which made me swallow. Hard. Whatever the truth, he appeared to believe in what he was saying.

“Um, sorry, but this isn’t the Middle Ages, you know. Women can defend themselves. I don’t need a knight on a white horse to save me.” If this situation hadn’t been so crazy, I’d have been looking out for a television crew, like one of those reality shows.

He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, then he looked at me again. “How can I make you see that your life is in real danger?”

I leaned forward, clasping my hands. “Why is it?”

“The demons will know you’re my mate and they’ll come for you.”

My head pounded. This guy was making no sense whatsoever, and I laughed. “What the hell do you mean by demons? What do you mean by mate? I’m not some slave you can just take. I still have my free will. What kind of designer drugs have you been sniffing, injecting, or smoking, Antoine?”

“Why don’t we all have something to eat? Then how would you like to take a shower or bath, Donna?”

Jeanie stood in the doorway. I wondered how long she’d been there. Was she crazy like Antoine? I wanted answers for sure. This man was important to me somehow. My mind was telling me that I needed to stay and be with him, although for the life of me, I had no idea why. But the weird thing was, I could feel my soul reaching out for his. It was as if I’d been searching for him all my life, even though I didn’t know him. I nodded and followed Jeanie into the kitchen, aware of Antoine’s eyes boring into my back.

Antoine’s hand caught mine. I turned to face him; his features had softened and he watched me with adoration in his eyes. My insides took a tumble, my mouth went dry, and my heart was flapping a million beats per minute.

“Look, I know all of this is confusing and strange to you. I shouldn’t have kissed you like that until you learn more about me. I’ll explain it all to you, I promise. You must understand that I’ll protect you, always. You’re safer here with me than anywhere else on Earth.”

His words confused me further. I decided to listen to what he had to say before I went on my way; I was intrigued to discover more. I needed to remain calm, even if I was screaming on the inside. My life was still over, and I needed to finish what I’d started. No man, no matter how he made me feel, was going to prevent the inevitable from taking place.

“That’s right, Donna. You need to leave, and soon.”The voice was back, sounding more urgent than it had before. And I agreed with him.

I still had to die.

ChapterThree

Antoine

Some of my Hybrid friends who’d discovered their mates had explained how powerful the pull was when they’d first met. It still hadn’t prepared me for how I’d feel when it happened. My intention had never been to almost jump her as soon as we met. I couldn’t help it, though. It was as if I was a puppet and someone else was pulling my strings. The kiss had been hot and fervent. Donna hadn’t tried to push me away either. She had also sensed the lure of our attraction. God, it had taken all my resolve not to rip her pyjamas away and sink deep inside her.

Before following her and my trusted friends into the kitchen, I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes. Donna was the most beautiful woman ever to walk this Earth. I’d seen my fair share of stunning women, and none would ever compare to my mate. Her eyes were like bright green emeralds and had an almost hypnotic quality to them. And when we kissed… Holy hell, it was intense. Her full breasts had squashed against my chest. She was wet too; I could tell by the way she clenched her thighs together, and her alluring scent filled my nostrils.

“Antoine, come and eat.”

Jeanie’s voice distracted my musings. My cock twitched inside my sweatpants. Probably not the best thing to wear around her. I pleaded for my dick to calm down. When I entered the kitchen, Donna was brushing her wealth of hair away from her face. That one simple act caused my breath to hitch. I got the impression that each one of her movements was going to have these kinds of effects on me.

I sat next to her and felt her anxiety rise. Her emotions were in turmoil. Whatever had driven her to attempt suicide was something I needed to know about. I couldn’t yet read her thoughts, but whatever had occurred in her life, it wasn’t good. The room was filled with silence, and for the first time in my life, I had no idea what to say. I ate and watched Donna out of the corner of my eye. She devoured everything on her plate as if she hadn’t had food for a long time.

“That was delicious. Thank you, Mac.”

The gentle smile that covered her lips melted my heart.

“You’re welcome, Donna. Would you like some more?”

“No, thank you. I need to be on my way soon.”

And then I heard her thoughts.
