“What’s the matter?” I pulled some strands towards my face with my fingers.

“Nothing. But I have an idea about how you should wear your hair.”

“It’s way too thick to do anything with, and I can’t wear it up. It’s too heavy to stay in place.”

My hair had always been like that. I only ever wore it down or in a ponytail.

“Don’t you worry about that, love. I have the perfect solution.” She tapped the side of her nose.

This left me wondering what other torture I was going to have to endure for this ball.

Antoine

After dinner with Mac and Jeanie, I took Donna for a walk along the beach. It was a warm, balmy evening, with the waves gently lapping at the shore. We stood with our arms around each other’s waists, gazing out to sea. She rested her head against my chest, and a smile touched my lips at the murmur of contentment coming from her. I leaned down and kissed the top of her head.

“It’s so beautiful out here.” Her words were soft and low.

I ran one hand down the length of her spine, drawing a shiver from her. She peered up to look at me, her eyes glittering from the light of the sun as it slowly made its way over the horizon. My chest constricted with the weight of my emotions.

“Yes, it really is,” I agreed.

She cupped one of my cheeks in her hand and reached up to kiss me. For one moment, I thought it was going to be a long, lingering one, but it appeared my mate had other ideas. Pushing away from me, she started to take off her clothes.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?” She giggled. “I’m going skinny dipping.”

Donna flung her bra and panties at me and headed for the sea. Caught up in her enthusiasm and the need to press up close to her naked body, I began taking my clothes off.

“Donna, did you remember to render yourself invisible?”

“Ooops, no. Hang on. Now done. Come on, Antoine. What are you waiting for?”

After half an hour of frolicking in the water and making love with the sea splashing around us, we headed for the shore.

“Let’s go flying naked,” she announced, her wings already emerging behind her.

My breath lodged in my throat at the vision of beauty before me. The sun was just setting, the golden rays casting an ethereal light around her. She looked like an angel.

“Well, half angel.” She smiled.

I hadn’t even realised my thoughts had come out. She sashayed towards me. I honestly didn’t know where to look first. Her wings fluttered slightly in the breeze, her breasts were bouncing, and… Jesus, I was lost for words.

“I feel it too when I look at you,” she admitted in a breathy voice.

We took off skywards. In that perfect moment, there was only Donna, me, and the sunset. No demons, thralls, familiars, or danger. I wanted to hold onto this memory for eternity. But I knew danger would be heading our way sooner or later. And then we’d have to be ready to fight and destroy Gustav.

With this in mind, I thought about the gift I had for her. I couldn’t wait to give it to her. For now, I’d enjoy this time of peace and tranquillity with the woman I was going to share the rest of my infinite life with.

ChapterTwenty-One

Donna

Jeanie and I were back in the bedroom, getting ready for mybig ordeal. I understood there would be people there I knew, but it was still terrifying. We were in our dresses and Jeanie had me sitting on a chair so she could do my hair.

“Why can’t I watch what you’re doing?”
