We began the task of undoing the boxes and pulling the tissue paper apart to get to the dresses.

“Donna, don’t forget to block your thoughts from Antoine. We don’t want either of those men to have a clue about these dresses.”

I rolled my eyes. “On it.”

I took my black and silver number out of the box and held it up. Even with my misgivings about dressing up, this dress was slinky and sexy. Jeanie walked over to one of the mirrored wardrobes and held hers against her.

She looked at me through the mirror and grinned. “Enough of this. Let’s try them on.”

There was a knock at the door.

“Quick,” she said as she grabbed my dress and hid both garments in the wardrobe. “We can’t let them see these. Okay.” She shut the door. “You can answer it now.”

I chuckled to myself. When I opened the door, Antoine stood there, a cheeky grin on his lips, and two smaller boxes held out in front of him.

“You ladies were in such a hurry, you forgot these.” He held them out to me.

Jeanie moved past me and cast her keen eyes over the boxes.

“Have you tampered with these?” She narrowed her eyes at him.

He shook his head, an expression of mock horror in his eyes. “I wouldn’t dare.”

Before he could say another word, Jeanie grabbed the boxes from his outstretched hands and shut the door on him.

“Jeanie,” I said with surprise. “You really are super sensitive about this, aren’t you?”

She took me by the hand and led me to the bed. She let out a long sigh and faced me.

“I know, love. But this is an important event for you. Antoine has been lonely for so long. It makes Mac and me so happy to see him in love.”

Instinctively, I reached out for Jeanie and we held each other close.

“I just wish my parents could’ve met him. They’ll miss out on all of this.” My grief overwhelmed me. I tried to keep it from Antoine, but he felt my pain.

“Do you need me?”

“No, it’s okay. Emotions are a little high in here right now, but we’ll be fine.”I closed off from him.

“I am so sorry for everything you’ve gone through. Mac and I will never be able to replace your parents, but we love you like you’re our own.”

We hugged a little more.

“Right, enough of this. Let’s try on these dresses and shoes.”

I had to admit that once the dress was on, it made me feel sexy and feminine. A hand went around my waist. Jeanie smiled as we watched ourselves in the mirror.

“Well, we look pretty hot.”

I had to agree with Jeanie; we really did.

“I only hope I don’t break my ankles in these killer heels.” I lifted one leg to examine the four-inch heels.

Jeanie giggled. “If you do break anything, at least with your powers you’ll heal fast.”

I put my hands on my hips and shook my head. “Oh, that makes me feel so much better. Anyway, let’s put these away. Antoine won’t go in the wardrobe, so they’ll be safe there.”

As we went to leave the bedroom, I saw Jeanie appraising my hair.
