“Of course.”

Clement led me to one side. Being on my own with this immortal made me a little apprehensive. I could feel power emanating from him, like a thrumming sound inside my mind. Even though he was a little intimidating, I still had questions I required answers to.

“Now, I believe you have some issues you’d like to discuss with me.”

I remembered about my past and realised he must know all about what I’d been through.

“Why did my parents have to die? What about my friends? I lost my job, my home, my money, and almost lost my life and sanity.”

“All fair questions. And let me offer you my sincere condolences. Unfortunately, I never know what will happen in a fated mate’s life. That’s purely down to the Fates themselves.”

“Well, they need a lesson in compassion. If Ievermeet them, they’ll get a real ass kicking.” I felt sadness creep up on me at what I’d lost.

Clement patted my hand. “I know it’s cruel. Believe me, I’ve seen worse. But there is one thing I can tell you.”

“What’s that?”

“The loved ones you’ve lost have moved on and will be forever at peace.”

That gave me some comfort. I could sense the truth and sincerity in his words.

“I was so close to giving up,” I admitted. “Gustav did a real number on me.” I shook my head.

“You and Antoine are a strong couple and I have no doubt in my mind that, when the time comes, you’ll defeat him.”

“Oh, you have my word on that. Bring it on.”

He chuckled. “I love your attitude.” His demeanour turned serious. “You’ll need all your strength soon. Someone you care about is going to be in danger.”

I looked over to where Antoine was now talking to the De Laurentis brothers, then at Jeanie and Mac. A cold sliver of fear worked its way up my spine.

“Just remember to keep strong and don’t fall for any tricks, okay?”

I nodded. I had the feeling he wasn’t going to say anything else.

“As much as I’d like to, Donna, I can’t. The Fates could perceive it as giving you too much information. That could be dangerous.”

“I’ll be ready, don’t you worry.”

“I know you will be.”

I caught sight of Lilah. She seemed distracted. In pain, like she was when she was at our home.

“Clement, I’m concerned about Lilah. This is the second time I’ve seen her in physical pain. I didn’t think Hybrids experienced it.” I worried at my lower lip.

“You’re full of sass and fire, but you have a huge capacity for compassion too. Don’t you worry about Lilah. She still has a long way to go.” He said no more, and the subject was closed. “And now, let’s get you back to Antoine.”

He took me to him and I held onto his arm for dear life.

“You have an amazing mate, Antoine.”

“I know,” he said, his eyes never leaving mine.

“Remember what I told you, Donna.” There was caution in his words.

“I will. Thank you.”

I watched as he headed in Lilah’s direction. My hope was that she’d get some words of comfort from him. I felt very protective of the new friends I was making.
