We checked out the garage to see if we’d need any gardening tools to get us started.

“We could do with a couple of spades and a rake. These look to be on their last legs.” I held up two rusty spades.

“Secateurs, hand tools… Hang on. I’ll get a pad and pen and make a list.” Jeanie headed out of the garage.

By the time we’d made our list, it was quite long.

“We can’t get started until we have these.” I gaped at the list.

“You’re right, love. This is a trip to the garden centre. We’ll have to wait until the men return.” She tapped her chin.

“Why? I’m a full-blown Hybrid now. We’ll be safe. And if there does look to be trouble, I’ll take to the air and fly us home.”

Jeanie still didn’t seem convinced. “Oh, I don’t know.”

“Where’s the nearest garden centre to here?”

“Ten minutes’ drive. Tops.”

“What could possibly go wrong? Look, if it makes you feel better, I’ll let Antoine know what we’re doing.”

“Okay, as long as you’re sure.”

“I am,” I assured her, kissing her cheek.

I only hoped that Antoine felt the same confidence I did.

ChapterTwenty-Three

Antoine

“Absolutely not, Donna.”

“Why? Don’t you trust me? God, Antoine. It’s only ten freaking minutes away.”

“I do trust you, but if Gustav or his familiars find you, then what?”

I rolled my eyes.“I’ll take to the skies with Jeanie and get our asses back here pronto.”

I cut our link for a moment so I could curse and swear.

“Jesus, what the hell’s wrong with you?” Lilah asked.

Lilah and Mac watched me with wide eyes.

“Donna wants to go to the garden centre with Jeanie.”

“And?” Lilah waited for my response.

“I don’t want them to go. Not with Gustav hanging around.”

“Antoine, your mate is more than capable of looking out for Jeanie and herself.”

“I agree with Lilah. They’ll be fine. If you don’t trust her now, when will you? She’s a capable young woman.”

“I second that, Mac. I’ve seen her in action.”

It looked like I was fighting a losing battle.
