“Are you ignoring me, Antoine?”

“No. Okay, go, but you keep your mind link with me open and communicate all the time. Do you understand? I know you’re more than capable, but I can’t help but worry.”

“I understand.”She sighed.“But you need to let me do things without you sometimes. There might come a time in the future when you’re busy and I’ll need to do things on my own.”

She was right, and I was being selfish. I needed to work on the difference between possessiveness and being protective.

“We’ll do it together. We have a lot to learn. I promise to stay in touch with you all the time. I love you.”

“I love you too. Stay safe.”

“Well?” Lilah asked.

“Looks like they’re off to the garden centre.”

Mac chuckled. “I’d be more concerned about how much money they’re going to spend than worrying about Gustav.”

I knew Donna was more than capable of protecting herself and Jeanie. I just couldn’t shake off the feeling in my gut that something was going to happen to them.

“Slow down, Jeanie. You’re like a racing driver.”

“We’ll be fine. Remember, we can’t die.”

I laughed. “Is that supposed to make me feel better? Anyway, who taught you to drive?”

“Antoine.”

“Why not Mac?”

She chuckled. “He tried, but my driving scared him.”

I could imagine Mac running screaming from the car. If I was a cat, I was certain I’d have lost a few lives on this short trip with Jeanie.

“She’s not that bad, babe.”

“Oh, yes she is!”

We came to a screeching halt outside the garden centre. There were only a handful of cars in the car park.

“Hmm, that’s strange.” Jeanie’s eyes were narrowed.

“What’s strange?”

“It’s the weekend. There are usually more cars in here.”

“Perhaps they knew you were coming and avoided your mad driving.”

We both laughed.

“Well,” she said hopping out of the car. “At least we’ll have the place almost to ourselves.”

We avoided the main building and went straight to where the plants were outside. I felt a little uneasy. Jeanie was pointing out what plants would be best for different areas of our new garden. I hardly heard her as I scanned the area. The only people I could see appeared to be workers. There was something odd, though. Like they couldn’t see us.

“Jeanie, don’t look up, but does anything feel off with you?”
