That next night wasn’t better. She went to bed early, trying to catch up on some of the sleep she’d missed.

It didn’t work. She was tossing and turning again, her thighs burning for touch. She didn’t dare to touch and please herself to release some of the tension that kept her from sleeping. After Silas’s words, she was paranoid and slightly ashamed. She’d thought she’d been quiet, and it was in the middle of the night so they should’ve all been asleep anyway.

When her alarm clock rang the next morning, she was a mess, tired and unsatisfied. She took another shower trying to calm her inner restlessness. Since the open house wasn’t until later, she dressed more casual for the morning with jeans and a light blue blouse.

Still on edge, she walked into the kitchen and straight to the pantry where she grabbed a chocolate bar. She needed something to calm her nerves. The light in the office was on, so she knew Amon–it still felt wrong using his first name–was working already. She grabbed another yogurt and cut some mangoes into a bowl. There was bacon and eggs in the fridge, but she didn’t feel like cooking and making a mess in a kitchen that wasn’t hers.

Footsteps told her that it was likely Rayen coming closer–Silas always sneaked up on her. She looked up and saw that she was right.

“Good morning, Gwendoline.”

“Good morning.”

“We were thinking of leaving around noon. Is it alright for you to take an early lunch?”

“Of course.”

“Perfect.” He came closer and leaned against the counter. “Have you found something to do tomorrow?”

“I might just go to the beach.”

“Good choice. The beaches here are worlds apart from Galveston.”

“I might take a picnic and spend all day there.” It was easy to talk to him. He was so different from his brothers, so relaxed and leaned back.

“Sounds like you have a beautiful day ahead of you. If you like, you can work outside again today, you don’t need to hide in your room all day.”

“Thank you.”

She carried her bowl through the living room and out onto the patio where she set everything down before going back to her room and getting everything she needed for work.

Rayen had disappeared, Mr. Seavey was still in his office, and Silas was nowhere to be seen. The sun wasn’t too hot, so she enjoyed soaking in the rays. She still felt uneasy, but the chocolate and Vitamin D helped calm her nerves.

Knowing that she still had to change and get ready for the open house, she left for an early lunch. When she came back, Silas and Rayen were sitting in the living room already nicely dressed in suits and leather shoes. Not wanting to give them a chance to talk to her she quickly walked into her room. She ate her lunch, before braiding her hair and choosing a black dress, with light pink flowers on it.

She opened her suitcase and took out the little jewelry box she’d gotten as a birthday present. With shaking hands, she opened it and added the jewelry to her outfit. She looked in the mirror one last time before slipping into those uncomfortable high heels that Katharina had chosen for her.

Silas and Rayen were standing by the stairs. Their eyes immediately fixed on her, traveling up and down her body. They both seemed to approve, Silas’s eyes darkening slightly and Rayen’s lips twitching into a smile.

“Amon is already waiting in the car,” Rayen explained as she looked around for him.

“Oh, I didn’t mean to make you all wait.”

“You didn’t, Amon is impatient, that’s all,” Silas said in his husky voice.

She followed them both out front and paused as she looked at the gravel. She would definitely fall if she tried to walk to the car, she already didn’t feel safe as is. Rayen must have seen her hesitation and was by her side right away, holding an arm out for her to hold on to.

“Thank you.”

She held onto him tightly as she slowly walked to the car. It was embarrassing to say the least. She wished she’d gone against Katharina’s recommendation and worn her own pumps that weren’t as high and thin as those. Silas held the door open for her while Rayen helped her inside.

The ride was quiet with Mr. Seavey and Silas in the front while Rayen sat next to her. If this would’ve been her first ride with them this would’ve made her feel uncomfortable, but by now she was used to it. She pulled out her phone, read emails, and started adding things to her to-do-list.

“You and Amon have quite a bit in common,” Rayen chuckled amused. “You both just can’t get enough of your work. I’m sure even now he’s thinking about all the paperwork he could be doing instead.”

She looked up, her eyes flickering to Mr. Seavey whose jawline slightly tensed.

“Maybe you should take Ms. Moore as an example.”
