He laid his arms around her shoulders, letting her rest her head on his chest. As she waited for his answer, she listened to his racing heart. The sun had been replaced by the moon, and the stars had begun to shine and sparkle all over the sky. Little lights had popped up all over the village as the homeowners turned on the lights inside their homes.

Combing his fingers through her hair, he calmed her even more. “My father gave me permission to speak to you about what we are. He wanted you to know and to understand what you would choose if you wished to stay with me. He told me it was up to you, what you wanted. He’ll welcome you to the pack if you choose to join us and he’ll treat you like his own daughter. He’ll provide for you and the child and make no difference between you and the other pack members. He also gave me the choice to leave. He knows what a burden it is to me to be part of the pack, but he never gave me that option before because he didn’t want me to be a lone wolf. You must understand wolves are social animals and they are the strongest and healthiest in a pack. Now that I have you and the child, he believes I wouldn’t lose my mind being alone.”

“That would mean you would leave your family, wouldn’t it?”

“Yes. Seth and my mother were angry. They disliked the idea of me leaving. A wolf who leaves his pack is usually not welcomed back. He cuts all ties to his past life and many wolves lose their mind over it. So, my mother suggested that I could stay part of the pack but live with you wherever you feel comfortable.”

“What would that mean for you? Would it be hard for you to live separate from your family?”

“I’m not sure how it would be to live separate from them. I’ve tried to distance myself from them over the past years, but I still live on our territory. If we were to live somewhere else, it would be risky for us. Depending on how we want to raise the child, there could be a risk of us being exposed. Unless we want to hide who we both are from them, which could also bear unknown risks.”

“I don’t want to hide who we are from our baby. There’s a chance it could be like either of us and hiding that would make things complicated.”

Hiding who she was from her own flesh and blood seemed like an option she could never choose. If her baby really were to be supernatural, she would want it to grow up knowing what it was. She never wished what she was going through on anyone.

Staying here seemed to be the best option for her child–maybe even for her. She would be able to start over and the baby would grow up knowing their own history without risking exposure. The child would have guidance and an understanding of itself if it were to be supernatural.

The feeling deep within her that had been guiding her over the past few weeks awoke, telling her she was making the right decision.

She gazed over the clearing. The village was lit up by the lights shining through the many windows and the stars and moon above. She’d only been here for half a day, but she couldn’t imagine raising a child anywhere else. It seemed like a peaceful place and even in the short amount of time she’d spent here, she felt like this was the right place to be. She looked up into Blake’s face and saw his pain reflected in his eyes, a pain that was caused by this place.

“What happens to you if we stay here? It clearly hurts you to be here but what would happen if we lived here?”

“Having you around might ease the pain. I’m hoping to be able to focus on you and the baby, to give my life a different meaning.”

It was worth a try, and if the pain would ever be too great for him to bear, there would always be the option of leaving and starting over somewhere else. “We should try and stay. We can see how you feel and if the pain actually becomes more bearable for you.”

“You haven’t even seen everything, met everyone, or know everything yet. You don’t have to decide this now. I don’t want you to decide now. Let it all sink in before you make a decision.”

He seemed to be very adamant on giving her time to decide on what she wanted, and it took a weight off her shoulders. Even saying that she could always change her mind made this easier for her.

The way he treated her, wanting her to be comfortable and able to make the right decision for herself, made her fall for him even more. She knew they had a lot to figure out. She knew he wasn’t ready for this, and neither was she. She tried not to think about the whole having a son situation and hoped for the best.

After understanding why he’d acted strange toward her all this time, she saw him in a completely different light. She understood what he was going through and admired him for his strength. The pain he must have gone through by submitting to Seth earlier must have been pure torture. Yet, he’d fought hard and hadn’t given in by obeying Seth–and he did it all for her. Pride filled her heart as she looked up at him.

Blake took her hand in his and got on his feet. “Come. You must be hungry and exhausted.”

Together they walked back to the house on the hill.

“I can make you dinner and you can decide whether you want to go home or stay the night.”

“I’ll stay if you don’t mind.”

“I would nevernotlike you to stay with me.”

She blushed a little and tightened her grip round his hand, his confession making her feel special in so many ways.

Blake stopped the bike in front of his cabin and waited for Niev to climb off. Watching her closely as she set her feet on the ground, he turned off the engine. She hadn’t said much on their walk back to the main house nor on the ride here. Other than the slight anger she’d shown him after revealing he’d never wanted a child, she’d been calm–that worried him more. After revealing what he was to her, he’d expected her to be upset. He’d prepared himself for her to walk out cursing him.

He reached for her backpack, but she shook her head and smiled. “It’s fine. It isn’t that heavy.”

He nodded and led her up the porch and through the front door. “Do you have any preferences for what you would like for dinner?”

She set the backpack next to the door and took her shoes and jacket off. “Whatever you eat I’ll eat.”

He opened the pantry searching for something to cook. “Maybe noodles with alfredo sauce.”

“Sounds delicious.” She came over and grabbed a pan from the drying rack and filled it with water, before setting it on the stove.
