As they walked down the hill to his bike Niev took his hand and entangled her fingers with his. “Is Bill part of the family?”

“Sort of, he’s Father’s beta. He’s his right hand and advisor.”

“So, he’s next in rank after your father and Seth?”

“Yes.”

“He seems to be a very nice man.”

“He’s like a second father to me.” He sat on his bike and awoke it as Niev climbed on behind him.

The drive back home was quiet. Niev was holding on tight to him and rested her head against his shoulders the whole drive home. She seemed content, and much more relaxed than yesterday. It was hard to believe that she’d only known him as a wolf for less than a day and yet she was as happy and relaxed as she could be.

It was a sunny day, and a nice breeze was blowing through the trees as they arrived at his cabin. Niev climbed off his bike, and he could see the exhaustion in her body. The drive must have gotten her a little too relaxed.

“There’s a nice grassy spot behind the cabin. We could grab a blanket for you to sit and spend the afternoon out there.” He’d never been the romantic type, but with her it came naturally, with little effort at all.

“I would love that.”

She followed him inside and while he was looking for a suitable picnic blanket, she grabbed some water bottles and snacks. As they walked around the cabin, she hooked her arm in his elbow.

“Do you spend a lot of time as a wolf?”

“Now more than a few years ago.” He’d never had anyone this interested in his life, and it made him feel special in a warm cozy way.

“What changed a few years ago?”

“When I first shifted, my wolf didn’t understand the whole Seth situation. He wanted to challenge Seth for the alpha title even though I didn’t feel the need for it. It is an alpha wolf’s basic instinct to challenge everyone who could be a threat to the alpha position.” He led her to a sunny spot in the middle of the grass and laid the blanket down. “It took my wolf a long time to understand and to accept our fate.”

Niev sat down and patted the blanket next to her signaling him to do the same. “So, you and your wolf are two different personalities?”

“Not quite, we are the same person, just two different versions if that makes sense. The human side has deeper feelings and sees the world in a more complex way, whereas that changes when we shift into our wolf. He sees the world through different eyes, and he’s controlled by his instincts.”

“And because of that your wolf didn’t understand the complexity of you being an alpha’s son, yet not having the right to be the future alpha of your pack?”

“Yes. It took my wolf an awfully long time to grasp that. For those first few years, I didn’t trust myself to shift without my father being present. I didn’t want to lose control. For my human side it was clear–I had no need to challenge Seth, but my wolf instincts were very strong.”

“Would your father have been able to stop you?”

“Yes, and he had to do so a few times.”

“I’m sorry that it’s been so difficult for you.” She gently caressed his cheek. “Is it easier for you now? Are you able to enjoy your wolf a little more?”

Her touch was truly comforting. He’d never experienced anything like her or this whole situation before. No woman had ever cared for him to such an extent that she did. He’d never known how good it felt to have someone like her in his life. Now that he knew this feeling, he never wanted to be without it again. It seemed as if they’d known each other for years. The comfort and trust they’d found in such little time were a true miracle.

“Most definitely. Now that my wolf has accepted our fate as well, it is truly amazing running through the woods as a wolf.”

He leaned closer to her and kissed her. She picked her arms up and laid them around his neck while he grabbed her hips and pulled her on his lap. As their lips touched a tingling feeling spread through his body that he’d only ever felt with her. He loved it–was even addicted to it.

Out of breath she leaned back, breaking the kiss and caressed his cheek with her thumb. “Being with you feels like I’ve finally found my home, even though we’ve barely spent time together.”

His heart melted listening to her words. “It feels the same for me. I can’t ever thank you enough for accepting me for who I am. I was afraid to tell you about me and my family because I didn’t want to lose you.”

She chuckled. “I felt the same about sharing what I am with you. It was only after you told me that it’s a gift that I truly saw it as such. You gave me a new perspective on who I am.”

“I’m glad I was able to do that for you. It broke my heart seeing you struggle with your gift. It reminded me of myself just a few years back.”

They fell silent as they enjoyed this perfect moment with each other. A few minutes later she turned red and shyly bowed her head to hide her face. He gently put a finger under her chin and lifted her head back up.
