“No, he sees me as his little sister, and never even asked me for any of that. I think he has kept me around for so long because I’m quiet and keep to myself most of the time. I’ve learned to enjoy the quiet nights I get when he’s out partying.” She started to lay her clothes in her suitcase and walked back into the closet to grab a few more.

“Have you ever been with a man before?”

She blushed and was glad he couldn’t see her face. “Yes.” Hearing a growl linger in his chest, she quickly added, “Just two.”

“When?”

“The first time when I was seventeen. He was my boyfriend, and we were both in our rebellious phase. We both went against our parent’s beliefs and thought it was the perfect way to show them how much we hated their lifestyles. Our parents were very religious and old fashioned. We weren’t even supposed to be dating let alone having sex before marriage.”

“And the other one?”

“I was getting lonely and one of Jason’s friends had asked me out a few times. After the third or fourth date he stayed the night.” She walked back over to the bed and started to fold more of her clothes. “Did you go out with women before?”

He nodded. “A few more than you. I ran away from home a lot and spent my teen years roaming around.” She just now remembered how old he actually was. It made her feel so inexperienced. Being with her must be like being with an inexperienced teenager.

“So, you were a ladies’ man?”

Blake only shrugged his shoulders.

“Does my age bother you?”

He crooked an eyebrow and tilted his head slightly. “Why would it bother me?”

“I’m so much younger than you.” She paused and lowered her voice out of shame. “So inexperienced.”

He got up from the bed and walked to her. He took her face into his hands and gently forced her to look into his eyes. “Everything about you is perfect and I wouldn’t want to change a thing. Selene made you an amazing and strong woman.” He smiled and continued with an amused tone. “Sometimes I even think she made you just for me and placed you in my life at just the right time.”

“I wish I could see myself through your eyes.” She laid her head on his warm and broad chest.

“With time you’ll see what I see. Until then, I’ll cherish you and remind you each day of who you are.”

Blake held her for a while before she remembered that she needed to finish packing. She turned her head and looked around the room. The suitcase was already full, and she hadn’t even packed all her clothes yet. “Maybe we should go and grab a few boxes on the way to my job.”

Twenty minutes later, Niev parked the truck in front of The Gardens. Niev opened the door and Blake mirrored her movement wanting to get out of the truck too.

“I think it’s better if you wait out here. I won’t take long.” She handed him the key to the truck. “Please don’t drive away and leave me.”

Blake looked a little hurt by her words. He leaned toward her and kissed her, his lips lightly brushing hers. “I could never leave you.”

“I’ll be right back.”

With cherry red cheeks, she climbed out of the truck and walked inside the restaurant. Mr. Hartman wasn’t happy to see her. She’d missed the last few days of work without an explanation, and he’d been one waitress down.

“Miss Snow, how nice of you to finally show up again,” he said with a sarcastic tone.

“Hello Mr. Hartman. May we have this conversation in your office?”

Reluctantly he started walking toward the back of the restaurant and into his office. It was a small space without a window, with barely any room for a desk and chair.

He sat in his chair and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “I should fire you.” He’d always been a grumpy boss and liked his authority over others.

“Actually, that is what I came here to talk to you about, Mr. Hartman. I no longer need this job. I’m just here to grab my things and let you know that I won’t return.”

Shock painted his face. One of his best employees just quit. She could see the wheels turning in his head as he was trying to figure out what he should do about all the workload that now fell on him. Niev had always picked up everyone’s slack and covered extra shifts.

“I’m sorry it is on such short notice but since you were going to fire me anyway, I hope it’s less paperwork for you this way.” She gave him one last smile before she walked to the employees changing room to grab her things. She’d never particularly liked Mr. Hartman. He was lazy and without his amazing employees, his restaurant would’ve been ruined by now.

She managed to sneak by everyone, grateful she was able to avoid their questions. She wasn’t eager to try and explain what was going on and would rather not make up some kind of lie. She snuck out of the back door unnoticed and walked around the building to the front parking lot where Blake was waiting for her.
