He was leaning against the truck typing something into his phone. He looked breathtaking, like every woman’s dream come true. His black curly hair was tied back, and his tight black shirt showed off his broad, muscular chest and big arms. He looked up and his eyes immediately locked with hers. A smile unfolded on his face, warming his beautiful brown eyes.

“How did it go?”

“Mr. Hartman wasn’t happy.”

Blake quickly opened the passenger door for her, but she ignored him and climbed into the driver’s seat. Blake sighed but didn’t say anything as he sat down next to her and handed her the keys.

“He tried to intimidate me by telling me that he should fire me, so I made it nice and easy on him and told him I quit.”

Blake’s eyebrows fused and his muscles stiffened. His protectiveness flattered her. “He tried to intimidate you?”

She shrugged her shoulders and drove off. “He’s a lazy man who likes to have power over his employees. Now he has to find someone new to pick up everyone’s slack. I always worked longer and took on extra shifts for the money and he never had to worry about hiring an extra person because of me.”

Blake took her hand in his and intertwined their fingers. “Did you have to worry about money a lot?”

“At the beginning I did, but not for the past year or two. I worked hard and saved up a little bit, but of course Berta always breaking down on me didn’t help my savings account. Wanting to save up as much as I could was also the reason why I didn’t have much of a social life.”

He picked up her hand and kissed it. “You don’t have to worry about money with me anymore.”

“How do you and your family earn money anyway?”

“We have a lumber business and do personalized wood works for our customers. Most of the pack men work for us. The business helps provide for everyone, especially for the old and sick, so no one has to go hungry. Some work for the business, others do jobs around the pack, such as Christa. Even though she doesn’t have an employer we still provide for her because she’s our healer. It only works because everyone is in the same boat. No one works to become rich. We all work for everyone to have a comfortable life.”

It sounded plausible even though Niev had a hard time grasping the thought that no one would act selfishly. She was so used to people being selfish, only working for their own benefit instead of others that it seemed almost made up to her.

Blake must have guessed what was going on in her head. “We have the wolf mentality: the pack is only as strong as our weakest wolf. If we only worked for our own selfishness, the old and weak would suffer. We’re linked to our pack, and we see it as one big family.”

She nodded, still shocked that something like that could exist. Everyone looked out for the other and made sure no one was left behind. The thought that she could be part of something so amazing warmed her heart.

After stopping to buy lunch and moving boxes, Niev and Blake parked in front of her apartment. As she climbed out of the truck her eyes caught sight of Jason’s cabrio still parked in its usual spot. She sighed and Blake turned to her.

“What happened?”

“Jason is still here. I was hoping to avoid a confrontation. He won’t take this easily.”

Blake grabbed the boxes and wrapped his other hand around her waist, squeezing her gently closer to his side as they walked to her apartment.

Niev opened her front door and let out a sigh of relief. Jason wasn’t in the living room nor in the kitchen. She walked toward her room and stopped by his closed door. He seemed to be alone watching something on his phone.

“I’ll talk to him. Wait in my room please?”

Blake didn’t seem happy, but he did it without question. As she knocked on Jason’s door, she saw Blake build together the moving boxes.

“Jason, may I come in?”

“Always.”

Jason laid sprawled out on the bed, holding his phone above his head. She walked closer and sat on his bed, legs crossed.

He sat up, his face turning serious. “This is one of those talks where I need to be an adult, right?”

“Yes.”

He nodded, signaling to her he was ready.

Inhaling a long breath, she mentally prepared for what was about to happen. “I want to move in with Blake.”

Jason’s eyebrows fused his seriousness now slightly upset. “You barely know him.”
