“No, she did it because she wanted it.”

“She’s a strong-willed woman.” He looked back down at his paper and Blake took that as a sign that the conversation was over.

The rest of the afternoon was quiet. Niev spent most of the time with his mother chatting in the kitchen. Niev had asked her to help and learn from her. According to herself, Niev’s cooking skills weren’t so bad that she would starve or die of food poisoning, but also not that of a world class chef. Blake made himself comfortable on the couch and was happily watching them both get along so well. He loved seeing her like this. She was happy, cheerful, and openly enjoying herself.

He thought about her family and how they had disowned her and how much she must be missing them. Though he was a grown man, he always enjoyed coming home to his mother–something Niev was most likely missing.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by his mother’s words.

“Have you two talked about having a commitment ceremony yet?”

“Blake told me about it, but we haven’t really talked about it further.”

His mother looked from Niev to Blake. “So, you two would like to have one?”

He nodded. “Yes.”

“Would you mind helping us plan one?” Niev asked shyly. “I don’t really know how something like that is done.”

“Of course I will!”

“As soon as the word is out the whole family will contribute and help us organize everything.” Blake knew his sisters and Lyliann far too well. They would be overjoyed and step right into action.

“We should plan something for after Selene’s night.” His mother suggested, seeming to already have everything planned out before even knowing there would be a ceremony.

Niev seemed a little insecure and confused. “Is that the night the new wolves shift for the first time?”

Blake got up, making his way to the kitchen. “Yes, the date always changes depending on the cycle of the moon.”

“When is it?”

He wrapped his arms around her from behind and gently caressed her stomach. “Next week.”

“Do you feel Selene stronger now?”

“Yes, her calling is becoming stronger and more present with each day.”

“Is the night celebrated by the whole pack or just the wolves?”

“Everyone will be there. It’s like a big party under Selene’s tree.”

She leaned her back against him and laid her hands on his. “Will the commitment ceremony be held under her tree too?”

“Yes, all our celebrations are held there, remember?”

“Oh yeah, you said that earlier. I like the idea of living just a short walk away from her.”

His mother turned her attention back to them. “Have you two decided on a house?”

“Father has offered us to make either Rina or Lira’s house our new home.”

“So much joyous news in one day.” His mother grinned from ear to ear as she continued preparing the meat.

It was just the four of them for dinner. His father joined them as soon as the food was plated while his mother continued to ask Niev questions about the ceremony and the house remodel. After dinner Niev and Blake offered their help to clean up, but his mother declined and told them to get home before the sun fully set.

As they walked back to Seth’s house where Blake had parked the truck, Niev seemed deep in her thoughts.

“What is on your mind?” he asked.
