“Yes.”

“Is it far from here?”

She still barely knew her surroundings and was glad to at least know where to find the village. It bothered her, but she knew with time she would figure things out. Until then she would just have to deal with it.

“A few miles up the highway toward Hunters Creek.”

“When will you be back tonight?”

He sighed. “I don’t know. With the time we lost dealing with the Skadu Pack, we have to catch up on a lot of work.”

“Okay. Would you like me to meet you here later tonight?”

“It’s up to you, beautiful. If you want to spend some time alone, come here. If not, stay in the village.”

He came around the bed and kissed her, pressing his hot lips against hers. Her heart started to flutter in her chest, her blood rushing through her veins.

“Please promise me not to drive in the dark. The dirt roads can become very hard to drive without the sunlight.”

“Okay.”

He grabbed his clothes, and she watched him walk down the hallway and heard the door close behind him. She grabbed his pillow with his scent on, cuddled up to it, and dozed off again.

She woke up to the sun warming her face and opened her eyes. The sunlight was flooding through the window, and she knew right away she’d slept far longer than she’d wanted to. She quickly got up and dressed, before rushing to the bathroom. After she washed her face and put her hair up in a tight bun, she made herself a few sandwiches for the drive. Blake had left the key for the truck on the counter, so she grabbed it and quickly made her way to the truck. It felt wrong not to lock the door behind her, but she didn’t even know if Blake owned a key to the house.

As she drove down the highway, she saw Cliff’s gas station and decided to stop for gas. She grabbed her wallet and walked inside. The old man was stocking up the shelves and looked up as the doorbell rang.

“Niev, Heal Bringer and Wolf Slayer. What an honor,” he greeted her with a smile.

Niev blushed. She’d assumed that Cliff was part of the pack, but she’d never seen him in the village. “Good morning Cliff.”

“How may I help you?”

“I would like to fill up the truck and maybe grab some chocolate while I’m here.”

He nodded. “I’ll get on that right away.”

“Don’t worry about filling it up, I don’t mind doing it.”

“I mind you doing it.” He gave her a wink and pointed at the aisle with the chocolate. “Take whatever you like while I fill up the truck.”

She nodded and obeyed, she knew the pack men’s pride was huge and part of that meant taking care of their women. Niev understood and appreciated it, but it would forever feel as if she could do more. She waited until Cliff came back in and laid the chocolate bars on the counter.

“What do I owe you?”

“Nothing”

“Oh… and for the gas?”

“I believe that truck belongs to the pack, doesn’t it?”

She nodded a little confused.

“Then, Wolf Slayer, you don’t owe me anything.”

It took her a few moments to put the dots together. She didn’t owe him anything because everything the pack needed was provided for them. The men worked and the women took care of the pack and so all the money flowed toward what the pack needed. She now felt a little stupid.

“Yeah, I think it’ll take me a while to get used to that.” She picked up the chocolates from the counter and waved him goodbye. “Thank you.”
