He stretched his body, his muscles tensing up beneath his skin. “You’re anxious.”

“Yes. I can’t fall asleep again.”

He sat up and pulled her to his bare chest, leaning back against the bed frame. “What makes you anxious?”

“Everything. I just hope it all goes well.”

“Nothing but you and I meeting under Selene’s tree is important today. As long as that happens, the day will be perfect.”

As she rested her cheek on his chest, she could hear his heart pounding in his chest. “Are you nervous?”

“I am, but more excited than nervous.”

“You won’t change your mind, right? You’ll be waiting under the tree for me?” Her voice shook. Her heart knew he would never leave her, but the anxiety was getting to her.

“I’ll be waiting for you, and I can’t wait to see you in that beautiful white dress walking toward me.” He put his fingers under her chin and tilted her head up. “I’ll miss you all day today. I might even run toward you to have you in my arms sooner if I see you walking toward me.”

“And I might trip over my dress trying to get to you.”

His chest rumbled and his mouth curled up into a smile. “I’ll catch you.”

“Thank you.”

He held her for quite some time, his fingers running up and down her spine, his touch calming and soothing her. They waited until the sun had fully risen before getting out of bed and dressed. Niev would spend the day at the main house preparing for the ceremony. Mayra had planned a whole day for her with getting ready and having a girls’ lunch.

“Will you be with Seth all day?”

“I believe so. I think he wanted to go for a run together before we get ready for the ceremony.”

“One last free run.” She giggled and straightened her dress.

“Will you have breakfast with me?”

“I wish I could. Mayra told me to come straight to the main house and she’ll have breakfast ready for me.”

He nodded and opened the bedroom door for her. She took his hand in hers, interweaving their fingers and following him outside. The sun was out but the sky was cloudy, and it looked like it would rain soon. Blake followed her gaze and looked up into the sky.

“Even if it rains, we are protected by Selene’s tree.”

“A wet knot is harder to untie.”

He seemed confused, so she explained it as they walked toward the village.

“A wedding is sometimes referred to as ‘tying the knot’ and marriages on a rainy day are believed to be the ones that last a lifetime.”

“Then a little rain won’t ruin our day,” he said lightly.

They walked in silence the whole way to the main house. The closer they walked, the more her anxiety peaked again. She held on tight to Blake’s hand, not ready to say goodbye to him quite yet. He led her to the front door and was about to open it when it was opened from the inside and Mayra appeared in the doorway.

“This is as far as I can allow you to go, Blake.” Mayra tried to look stern, but her face was beaming in excitement. “You may say goodbye to Niev and the next time you see her will be at the ceremony. So, no lingering around here and peeping through the windows.”

Blake let out an amused laugh. “I assume that’s why Seth is taking me on a run–so I can’t linger around here and peep through the windows?”

“Maybe,” Mayra said, looking a little too mischievous.

Blake turned to Niev and cupped her face in his large hands. “I love you very much. I’ll see you tonight.”

“I love you too and have fun on your run.”
