Everyone’s eyes fell on Blake, and he nodded. Blake nudged Niev into his mothers’ arms and stepped back, shifting back to his human form, forgetting that Niev could feel it too.

She tensed up again, her face hardening, her heart speeding up.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“It’s okay.”

He quickly grabbed his pants and started to explain, “I was thinking something more to myself than to Niev and she heard me.”

“Fascinating.” His father seemed speechless along with everyone else.

Blake sat next to Niev and felt his touch soothing her. “Maybe it’s just part of the bond.”

“I’m sorry.” She blushed and leaned into his touch. “I’m overreacting, but it surprised me so much.”

“Don’t apologize. It surprised us both.” He helped her to her feet and led her inside. “Maybe we should give you a few minutes before we go on our walk.”

She agreed and sat on the couch. Everything seemed to be a lot for her to process. He could also feel something making her feel uncomfortable, but he didn’t want to ask her here in front of everybody.

Before dinner, they went on their walk with Darron and Alizia. Blake thought it was best for now not to shift and explore their new ability alone at some point. He could sense Niev’s anxiety and didn’t want to push her too much. All of this was new to the both of them and he could feel that she was overwhelmed. Even he had trouble understanding and with her hormones, the twins and everything else still being semi new, their new bond put an even heavier load on her.

After dinner, Blake and Niev decided to go home early. Ann and Kareem weren’t set to leave until later that night, but Blake and Niev needed some time for themselves.

He pulled his sister into a hug and squeezed her. “Thank you for coming.”

“Oh Blake, I’m so grateful I was able to come see you. I’m so happy for you and Niev. Take care of her and spoil her for me.”

“I will.” He turned to Kareem who patted his shoulder. “It was nice seeing you again. Take care of Ann.”

“I’ll cherish her with all my heart.” Kareem turned to Niev, and she hugged him. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Niev. I hope we can welcome you and Blake soon as our guests.”

“Thank you for coming. I really do hope we have the chance to meet your pack soon. It would be an honor.” She turned to Ann and hugged her too. “It was very nice meeting you. Thank you for the picnic last night.”

“You’re very welcome. Make sure Blake spoils you and if he doesn’t, let me know so I can kick his butt for you.”

They both giggled and Niev took Blake’s hand in hers, waving everyone else goodbye. Blake led her outside and was already holding the door when she stopped in her tracks and turned toward his father’s office. She gently knocked and opened the door.

“I’m sorry, Tanner. I just wanted to grab the boxes.”

“Come in. Bill and I are just talking over a few things.”

“Oh,” Niev seemed surprised. “Hello Bill, I didn’t even know you were here.”

“I didn’t want to disturb anyone.” She walked inside and out of Blake’s sight.“I don’t think you would’ve disturbed anyone.” Blake heard her grab something before her footsteps came closer again. “Thank you. I’ll make sure to bring back the necklace tomorrow. Goodnight, Bill,” she said as she returned with a smile on her face.

He took the boxes from her, and she hooked her arm into his. They walked onto their little path when Niev broke the silence.

“Do you think something is up or does Bill come to Tanner’s office from time to time like that?”

“I don’t believe it’s anything we need to worry about. Sometimes things come up, like a home needing repair or a fight between members. Father likes to know about these kinds of things right away.”

“Maybe I’m just paranoid because of the first few weeks I came here.”

“Those aren’t what our normal day-to-day life looks like. Usually everything is calm. The worst thing that happens is a fight between pack members, and even those are tame.”

She nodded as he held open the door for her to step inside the house. “Time to put some comfy clothes on.”

He watched as she walked to the bedroom and sat on the couch waiting for her to come back. He grabbed her blanket, the one she always enjoyed cuddling up to and was holding the last book she was reading. It was something to do with patient care and how to reduce pain with natural resources. When she saw him, a huge smile spread on her face and he could feel how loved she felt in this moment. She cuddled up next to him and opened the book.
