It was a strange sensation. He’d always had control over his wolf during all shifts. His mind had always been the one ruling the wolf instincts, making sure he was more human than wolf. Now it was the other way around. He was more wolf than human, and that wolf was searching for his mate. It was frustrating as he struggled to regain power.

Blake could feel his lungs fill with air as his wolf tried to scent her. Paws moved without care for what was beneath as he walked out into the fresh air. Blake’s mind was trapped, unable to move a muscle. He could see and hear, though all other functions were unavailable to him.

He could hear his father, Seth, and Tristan shift behind him, his father’s mind searching for his own, but his wolf couldn’t care less. His wolf opened his mind but not for his father–for Niev.

While his wolf was busy searching, his father and Seth started to slowly stalk closer, their eyes dark and their growls threatening. Tristan was behind them, seeming unsure of what to do. All of a sudden, Blake’s paws started moving, sprinting around the house and toward the village. Unable to do anything, Blake watched as his wolf raced through the village. As people saw him coming, they screamed and jumped to the side.

He could feel Seth right behind him, snapping at his tail, trying to catch him. Yet, that only seemed to encourage his wolf to speed up even more. He sped into the woods running southeast. He seemed to be following something Blake wasn’t able to pinpoint.

His wolf was definitely tracking something, but Blake couldn’t wrap his head around what it could be. He crossed the highway and adjusted his direction, now running further east. Seth and his father were falling behind, but Tristan was keeping up with him. He wasn’t very close, but his speed stayed steady behind Blake.

Trying to figure out where his wolf was heading, Blake stopped fighting him and tried to see more clearly. It only took a moment before it hit him right in the soul. His wolf was following their mate bond, it was like a fine silver line right in front of him. The bond was leading him in Niev’s direction.

Blake’s mind stopped fighting his wolf completely and let him lead them closer to Niev. Over the next few miles, Blake’s euphoria slowly decreased as the exhaustion of the day caught up to him. His pace slowed down with each step he took and the light silver line faded as the exhaustion made him lose his focus.

His wolf only stopped moving when his legs caved in and his muscles began to cramp. His wolf’s mind slowly gave back control to Blake, as if to say, ‘I showed you how, now you do the rest’. Tristan was by his side just a few moments later, gently nudging him with his nose, his mind pushing against his. Blake opened up to him and was immediately bombarded with questions.

‘What happened? Why are we so far east? Where are you going?’

Blake needed a moment to adjust to the new situation. He gently stretched his sore muscles and took a deep breath. ‘My wolf took over. It was as if I was side railed. I wasn’t able to do anything but watch as he started running. It took me a while to figure out what he was doing, but he found her. He found a way to track Niev.’

Blake could feel Tristan’s confusion. ‘What?’

‘Our mate bond somehow connects us and I can feel or see in what direction I have to go to find her.’

Tristan’s confusion only intensified. ‘Bill tracked her south, we are heading east now.’

Tristan was right. He didn’t doubt that Bill had tracked Niev correctly but that had been hours ago. He trusted his wolf, his instinct, and the bond. Niev was east and that’s where Blake would be heading as soon as his legs were able to move again.

‘Tristan, trust me she’s east.’

Master

When Blake woke up it was still dark, the moon was high up in the sky, lighting up the trees around him. He stretched his aching muscles and sat up, his wolf pacing impatiently in the back of his mind. His wolf was the only reason why he was already up. He was eager to keep going, to search for Niev, rescue her and bring her back home.

Tristan was asleep next to him, his wolf snoring, chest vibrating. Before passing out, Blake had informed his father and Seth of what he’d discovered. They’d both agreed that Blake shouldn’t continue searching for Niev. That he should rest and wait for Seth and some of the other warriors to catch up. His father would stay behind with the pack in case of any further attacks.

They had no idea who they were dealing with, and his father was concerned about Kai’s suspicions that these wolves weren’t average. He didn’t want to leave the pack and risk their lives in case the wolves came back. The thought alone of Niev being with wolves that seemed to be more powerful than an average wolf scared Blake. He knew Niev was strong, and that her ability would heal her, but that still didn’t mean that they couldn’t harm her. If they tortured her or used her healing ability against her will, they would break her soul, crushing it into a million pieces.

He couldn’t help but growl as he began to pace back and forth. Blake had no idea how much time had passed since he’d fallen asleep, but it was definitely too much. Every minute he spent not searching for Niev was too much.

Blake sent out his mind searching for Seth, who opened up right away. ‘Where are you?’

‘On our way. You should be resting, Blake.’

Blake couldn’t rest; his mind was too wild. ‘I can’t. Not without her safely in my arms.’

Seth sent him reassurance through the mind link. ‘I know you’re scared for her, but you need to rest. You won’t be able to save her if you’re too exhausted to fight.’

Blake knew Seth was right and took a slow, deep breath. He forced his muscles to relax and laid down. ‘I’m trying.’

He could feel Seth’s relief. ‘Good. I’ll soon be by your side, brother.’Seth closed his mind off.

Blake tried to calm both his mind and his wolf by reassuring himself that he would be with Niev soon enough. After a while, his mind drifted off dreaming about holding Niev’s beautiful figure in his arms.

He only woke up again when he was nudged, and Seth’s mind was touching his. Blake was on his paws, sleep brushing off within seconds.

‘I’m awake.’
