The sun was already rising in the east. Seth had come with seven of their warriors which now made them a group of ten. His wolf was still impatiently waiting in the back of his mind, but seemed at ease with the extra back up.

‘Where to?’Seth asked.

A little unsure, Blake opened his mind to the bond but to his disappointment, he couldn’t. His wolf stepped forward, wanting to take control as he’d done the day before.

‘I need to let my wolf take over.’

Seth nodded, curious. ‘We’ll follow you.’

Blake though was still a little apprehensive. ‘I don’t think you’ll be able to talk to me once he does.’

Seth didn’t seem to mind, so Blake inhaled, filling his lungs. He mentally stepped aside and let his wolf out who launched forward, taking control right away. Blake was no longer able to do anything, feeling paralyzed as his wolf started to stretch his muscles and search for the bond. It took him a few moments to find it within his soul.

Thelittle silver string showed up in front of him as he opened his heart and soul to her. Blake’s wolf hummed as his paws started to move, following the bond on a route that took him northeast. It worried Blake that the direction had changed. He hoped those wolves weren’t still moving with her. It would make finding her even harder.

Trusting his wolf, Blake relaxed his mind and watched as they moved through the woods. When they came closer to the outskirts of the forest, Blake wondered if his wolf understood that he would have to find a way to stay hidden from humans. Seth and Tristan seemed to think the same as they overtook him to stand in front of him, stopping his wolf in his tracks. He didn’t seem to like that very much and started threatening Seth and Tristan, baring his teeth a lingering growl that came from deep within his chest.

Blake quickly pushed his mind forward, trying to calm his wolf and regain control. It took him a few moments to persuade his wolf to give him back control and be able to talk to Seth and Tristan. He promised his wolf that he would gain control again as soon as they found a solution.

Blake shook his head as he adjusted and relaxed his posture to be less threatening. He quickly opened his mind to everyone around.

‘He doesn’t understand that we need to hide ourselves.’

‘We thought so too,’Tristan agreed. ‘What should we do now? Should we continue in the same direction as humans or find a way around and keep going as wolves?’

Blake had trouble thinking as his wolf nagged him for control. Seth seemed to feel his struggle and made the decision.

‘The way Blake’s wolf is acting I don’t think we should continue as wolves. We might be slower taking a detour, but the forest continues southeast. We could follow it till we hit the outskirts of the mountains. We might need to wait for nightfall to head further northeast.’

His wolf didn’t like the idea of taking a detour. Blake tried to tame him, reassuring him that every step they took brought them closer to Niev. Thankfully his wolf agreed, and Blake could talk to the others with a clearer mind.

‘My wolf doesn’t agree to the idea of a detour, but I was able to persuade him.’

Seth seemed to relax a little. ‘Can you keep control until we get back on track?’

‘Yes.’

Blake had to–there was no other way. He motioned Seth to take the lead and they followed the forest’s outskirts around Mirefield. The small town was surrounded by the forest to one side and a hillside that led into the mountains further east.

Blake basically followed Seth blind as most of the time he was occupied with his wolf. At some point, one of the warriors suggested they should go hunt. Seth sent out half the men to do so and bring enough food back so everyone could eat and regain their strength before losing cover of the trees. As they waited, Blake paced back and forth, unable to rest while his wolf was begging him to be set free to save their mate. Tristan and Seth had their eyes fixed on him and Blake knew they were just waiting for him to snap.

Niev regained consciousness when the sun peaked through the windows and warmed her face. She opened her eyes and looked around, adjusting to the bright light of the sun. At first, she had no idea where she was, but then reality hit her in the face and stabbed her soul at the same time. She was still laying on the floor right where she’d passed out hours ago her face just inches away from her own vomit.

She sat up, perhaps a little too quickly. The sudden change in elevation made her dizzy. The room she was in looked even dirtier in the daylight than it had in the dark. The fire was extinguished, and the room was now only lit through the windows opposite the fireplace. She was frozen in place, unable to move as she took in the cruel reality of her new surroundings.

Some part of her wished she was still passed out. Unconsciousness relieved her of the heartache that was rushing through her veins, spreading into each inch of her body. Her soul longed for Blake, for him to hold her, heal her, and take her home. She laid her hands on her belly and started caressing her girls, trying to comfort herself with the thought that Blake would come and save them.

When she heard footsteps approaching, her heart started pounding fearfully against her chest. The footsteps stopped in front of the door before a key in the lock turned and the door was pushed open. A young man, not older than nineteen or twenty entered the room. Apart from a pair of old, distressed jeans he was naked, his skin dirty, and his long, brown hair matted. It looked as if he hadn’t bathed in months. Around his neck he wore what seemed to be a metal collar, and in his hands he held a dress.

Confused, he looked at the bed before his gaze fell to where Niev was sitting on the floor. His confusion turned into worry as he saw the vomit next to her.

“Are you not feeling well? Is it morning sickness? Don’t worry–I’ll clean this up right away.”

He tossed the dress aside, closed the door behind him, and locked it. With the key in his hand, he rushed over to what seemed to be a bathroom. He returned a moment later with towels in his hands. Kneeling next to her, he quickly cleaned up her vomit.

Still concerned, he looked up at her. “Are you still feeling sick? Come, I’ll help you to the bathroom.” Without waiting for an answer, he grabbed her hands and pulled her to her feet.

His touch didn’t feel as wrong as that of the beastman, yet she flinched anyway. He didn’t seem to notice as he was already pulling her toward the bathroom. Her legs barely held her up. The bathroom was even worse than the bedroom and made her want to throw up again. He quickly led her to the toilet just in time, as she spit up bile.
