Not wanting him to be mad at her for not understanding, she quickly explained. “I didn’t know anything about Selene or her wolves up until a few months ago. I grew up in the human world.”

His disappointment faded slightly. “My parents were creations of Selene. They were born wolves, formed to worship her as their true goddess. One day, my parent’s pack stumbled across a village. Fascinated by the humans, they prayed to Selene to transform their shape to be like that of humans. Willingly, Selene crafted and reformed their bodies with her magic and made them human. To my parents’ disappointment the villagers were nothing like they’d hoped. They were closed-minded, and hunted my parents, killing their friends and family.”

She looked at him in shock, she’d heard that story before, when Blake told it to her. The beastman was what Blake referred to as a Lycan. When Blake told her the story it sounded like it had happened thousands of years ago.

Solomon misread her shock and disbelief as amazement. “It’s true. I’m one of the last of her true children, closer to my moon goddess than any of those pathetic creatures could ever be. She has blessed you greatly by bringing you my way, placing you under my protection.”

She forcefully swallowed the bite of food in her mouth, suppressing another gag. Selene hadn’t placed her with him. She’d chosen Blake to be Niev’s true mate. Blake was the one she’d mated, bonded, and solidified her love with. Selene blessed her to carry Blake’s children, to feel his thoughts, to hear his wolf speak.

She needed to hide her disgust before Solomon figured out how she truly felt, so she quietly asked, “And the other wolves here?”

“My own creations.”

“You turned them?”

He nodded proudly.

“If you can create wolves for yourself, why do you need me?”

He leaned forward and took her hand in his, pain shooting up her arm again.

“After many years on my own, I am craving a mate, a woman who is strong enough to carry my children. I am one of the last and you’ll bear more of my future. You’re providing me with a womb sturdy enough to bear my kind. You see, many women have failed me, losing my children or dying before they could gift me with what I have been longing for.”

She cringed as she realized what his words meant. Niev wasn’t the first woman he’d kidnapped. He’d forced himself on women, impregnating them and sentencing them to death. The dress she wore was worn down because other women had worn it for him. Her disgust for his actions nauseated her and the little bit of food she’d swallowed came back up. She leaned over to the side and threw up again, spitting everything on the floor.

Solomon got to his feet and walked around the table. Placing his finger under her chin, he forced her to look up. “Growing my children is truly taking a toll on you. You need to rest.”

Without warning or asking for permission, he picked her up placing his arms underneath her and carried her out of the room. He pressed her body against his hairy chest, forcing his touch on her. Her skin burned as invisible flames blazed over it, leaving trails of agony. She moaned with relief when he finally laid her on the bed and his skin no longer touched hers.

Her relief didn’t last as he started to stroke her cheek, his claw-like nails scraping over her skin, somehow without cutting it.

“Rest. You need to keep your strength as you grow my future within your womb.”

He left, leaving her in agony, the embers of his flames still dancing over her skin. She closed her eyes and let exhaustion, hunger, and pain swamp her, burying her beneath them, so that the darkness could wrap around her.

True Strength

Niev’s mind was clouded in darkness, but it was slowly fading away. She whimpered in pain, the exhaustion and hunger returning. She wasn’t ready for her heart to pump loneliness through her veins. Her skin already longed for Blake’s soothing, healing touch.

As the darkness faded, she curled up into a fetal position trying to protect herself from what was to come. The hunger was there, and the exhaustion was worse than it had been before she’d passed out. The feeling of loneliness and the burning on her skin, on the other hand, weren’t there. Instead, she could feel a slight tingle in her fingers. A tingle that felt good–warm, and soothing.

The tingle slowly spread up her arm, through her veins and to her heart. The warmth that spread through her muscles and veins was calming and comforting. She concentrated on the sensation as it spread through her and relaxed each inch of her body. She took a deep breath and calmly let the air flow out of her body, taking in the beautiful feeling that washed over her. As her body relaxed, her mind did the same and slowly opened up. She freed all her worries and let the peaceful feeling take over.

‘Niev.’Blake’s quiet voice resonated from far away through her mind.

At first, she didn’t realize it was him. The voice was so far away that it didn’t seem real. As she concentrated on his voice, she began to feel his emotions. They seemed far away and because of that distance it seemed harder to grasp them. She opened her mind even more and focused everything on him. He seemed exhausted, worried, and in pain. Yet, she felt his excitement and relief.

‘Blake?’

‘I’m coming, beautiful.’

Her relief freed her from all the pain she’d felt. ‘You are?’

His emotions soothed her. She knew without him having to tell her that he was getting closer. ‘Always. We’re coming and we will bring you back home.’

‘You’re not alone?’

A faded picture of a black wolf with green eyes appeared in her mind. ‘No, I’m not.’
