Tears welled up in my eyes.

Jamie’s expression lightened, the compassion I was more familiar with shining through suddenly. “Hey. Are you alright? We can stop. You don’t have to ask anything. I’m sorry I even said that.”

I ignored him, staring back at the planchette through clouded vision. “Please tell me… please tell me…”

I took in a deep breath.

“Please tell me…” I said once more. “Why nobody ever loves me enough to stay?”

“Jemma… let’s stop…”

“Let me get my answer,” I demanded, tone harsher than I’d ever heard in my entire life. The object moved around the board at an abrupt pace, circling but never stopping. Circling and circling and circling…

The sound of the blast rang through my mind. The planchette didn’t seem like it would stop. I needed another question. Ineededan answer… I saw Dad in the kitchen, dead on the floor. His damp hair soaked in his own blood.

My voice shook as I spoke. “Please tell me…whyit happened…”

The planchette circled the letters more slowly. Stopping on the letters G. U. N.

“I know that, you stupid thing!” my voice screeched, sharp even to my own ears. Piercing into my soul. “But that doesn’t tell mewhy.”

“Gun?” Jamie asked. “What does gun mean? What did you ask?”

I ignored him again.

All I wanted to know was…

Why did my father leave me?

The planchette circled around the letters once more. This time, it moved at lightning speed. The sentence it spelled out was:

Because your dad never loved you.

“This is nuts,” Jamie said. “We need to stop. This is ridiculous.”

I focused my eyes on the board, ignoring Jamie.

Your dad never loved you, the Ouija board spelled out a second time.

“Jemma… let’s stop,” Jamie said.

He never cared, the Ouija board wrote.

“Don’t listen to this, Jems.”

Your dad is glad to be far away.

“Why the fuck does this thing keep going on about your dad?”

Your dad would do it again.

“Don’t listen to this, Jemma.”

Then, I heard the next words in my mind.

Do not listen to the boy who will never love you.

No one will ever love you.
