The rest of the events are hazy as I let the bloodlust consume me. I’m aware of screams, of laughter from Thorn, Yves, and Syn, and growling from Midnight, Eros, and Raphael. My teeth tear through flesh, my strength breaks limbs. Oceans of blood run down my face and body, but I catch enough to tame the monster tearing through me right now.

Slowly, the screams die down to whimpers, and I blink back my vampire to take in the scene. The walls and floors are drenched in blood and bits of flesh, and the three men who were mine and many others’ tormentors lie in a heap on the floor. Eli leans against a wall, eyes dazed and clothes covered in blood, while Yves and Syn sit on a table nearby.

They slowly begin to clap for me and Eli, and I find myself laughing as the murderous fog lifts.

“Felt good to just let go, didn’t it?” Yves asks.

“Yes. I didn’t realize how much I held myself back.”

Syn nods. “Yeah, why do you think we became assassins? You need an outlet for the beast.”

I kick Garrett’s body over, finding him still alive, but barely. I’ve torn his throat out, but at some point, I ripped his chest open too. Blood and guts spill from his torso as he stares at the ceiling.

I lean down as close as possible. “Say you’re sorry, Garrett, and I’ll put you out of your misery.”

His eyes flutter as he forces them to focus on my face. He mouths the words “fuck you” unable to speak anymore. I smile, patting his wounded chest.

“Okay then. Just wait to die.” Standing, I swipe my arm across my mouth, smearing some of the blood. “Let’s get them away from here.”

Yves and Syn both nod as Yves kicks open the side door. The others have retrieved an SUV and pulled up. With vampire speed, they collect the bodies easily, wrapping them in tarps and loading them into a vehicle out of sight. When they return, Syn drops a hose inside the room.

“Fuck. I didn’t even think of the bloodbath left behind,” Eli says.

Syn chuckles. “No worries. It’s your first time. You have new clothes, right?”

“Yes,” I answer. “Hanging outside of here.”

“We’ll be upstairs again shortly,” Yves says. “Give us your suits to dispose of.”

“Right.”

Eli and I strip out of our bloodied suits, handing them to Yves, who disappears into the night while we wash down the room and ourselves.

“We have extra clothes in the other room,” I say, heading for the door.

We dress quickly, then, using our speed, race back to the penthouse to freshen up completely. Within minutes, we’re back at the ball, looking as though nothing at all happened.

Just a few minutes after that, Yves and Syn appear with their other coven members, relaxed and natural.

Eli goes to the bar to get two glasses of wine, but when he comes back, Yves takes one of his glasses, holding it under my nose. I inhale the bouquet, catching something off.

“What is that?”

Eros chuckles. “A little extra insurance. Our friend Viv helped us out with a memory spell. We spiked all the drinks with it. Tomorrow morning will be a hazy but pleasant memory for each guest. Well, except for three of them.”

“That’s brilliant.”

“It doesn’t affect us,” Yves explains. “We just wanted you to know.”

“You guys are badass,” Eli says, leaning into me.

“We’re impressed with the two of you,” Yves says. “It takes a lot to pull off what you did. The ball is a nice touch.”

I smile, swirling the wine in my glass. “I’ll have one more after this to thank the town, and then wrap them up. My mission is complete.”

Later that evening, as Eli and I enter the apartment again, what happened tonight hits me and my knees buckle. Eli grabs my arm.
