Silence.

“Bad day?” he finally asked.

Sapphire bit the next sigh in. “Kind of. My magic’s just not up there lately.”

It was more that her reliance on potions was taking its toll, repeatedly reminding her that she was weak until she was tired of hearing it. This morning, she wielded her magic in a secret forest patch without the help of her potions—and got a nasty cut on her fist when she failed to splinter a board. In the end, she had to heal the cut with a potion, feeding into her anger and driving the sore point. Again.

Don’t elaborate. It’s your weakness to bear.

“Hmm.”

“I’m not into jewelry,” she said, changing the topic. “So, you don’t need to gift them to me.”

“Hmm.”

“But I do appreciate that you…made me a new one.”

She waited for him to smirk, to smile, or to do any of the things that indicated he was either amused or appreciative of her show of giving in. But Klaus remained as stony as ever.

“You’re still angry,” she deduced.

“Yes.”

“What do I have to do to get you to stop being angry?”

“There’s nothing you can do.”

There was so much bite in his tone that it bordered on vicious. Caught off guard, she took a step back.

“Oh. If you say so.”

When he still didn’t speak, Sapphire bore down her embarrassment and walked away, not about to subject herself to whatever wrath was swimming inside him. She bit back a sound seconds later when again, he was in front of her glowering at her with his foul mood.

“Okay, how many times are you going to block my path before you realize that’s the only apology you’re getting?”

“Sapphire—”

“I’m not going to beg and keel over to your bidding.”

“I know that,” he growled.

“And I’m not going to grovel if that’s what you’re after—”

“Hell, no, that’s not what I’m after. Damn it. Saph…I am angry.”

She opened her mouth to keep ranting, but the tone of his voice held a frustration that wasn’t directed at her. Sapphire perused him.

“I can see that.”

“But it’s not at you,” he said, confirming her suspicion. “Maybe a little bit after the rejection, but trust me, it’s not just that.”

“Then what is it?”

Silence.

“I can’t tell you.”

She gave up, the back-and-forth giving her a headache. With a resigned exhale, she held the gift box to him.
