Ryland came closer to her, and without warning, he drew his fingers along the column of her bare back. The keyhole back of her pink petal dress ended at the very tip of her ass, and he followed the long line all the way down.

“You’re elegant,” he whispered before placing a kiss on her shoulder.

“Oh,” she gasped, arching into him. “That’s the first time someone called me that,” she whispered.

“Then you’ve always been surrounded by fools.” He kissed her shoulder again.

“Ryland,” she warned, and he stepped away from her.

“We need to leave this room. Now.”

She frowned at him. “Why? I didn’t take that long to get ready, did I?”

“Not what I mean,” he growled back, taking a few steps away from her.

As he did, his eyes raked down her body appreciatively. Caroline blushed. She wasn’t usually flattered when a guy gave herthatkind of attention.

But this wasn’t any kind of man.

This was Ryland Wolverton.

The man drove her to madness with his behavior, and there was no real sense to the way he kept her close and then pushed her away, only to want her close again.

Maybe this was why.

Maybe he was attracted to her, and he didn’t want to be for some reason.

She felt the same. Maybe their mutual reluctance was the biggest obstacle between them.

Caroline shook her head against the foolish notion.

It didn’t matter if he wanted to be attracted to her or not. He was, and so was she.

And that was that.

It didn’t mean they had to act on it. They were grown adults who could keep their lust under check.

Ryland opened the hotel room door and offered her his arm. Just another instance of pushing her away just to keep her close. She walked by him, refusing the offered arm. Shereallyshouldn’t touch him right then. It would lead to trouble. She was sure of it.

As she passed by him, she said, “Do you think your mother would disapprove of me?”

He frowned on his way to the elevator. “What? What is that supposed to mean?”

“If wewerea couple, would she find me lacking? Not rich enough. Blood not blue enough.”

Ryland chuckled. “My brother’s girlfriend was almost arrested for corporate espionage, andshe was on the run. My sister is married to a Hollywood actor. My mother really doesn’t care about that stuff.”

It was her turn to frown. “Which Hollywood actor is your sister married to?”

He winked at her. “Nope. That’s a family secret that Rylee and a whole bunch of PR people have been able to keep secret. I’mnotspilling the beans.”

“Didn’t you say she was pregnant?”

“Oh, she is. But that’s just one of the reasons why she doesn’t want the whole world to know she’s married to this guy. In fact, everyone thinks he’s single.”

“I don’t get it. I would be crazy jealous.”

He chuckled. “I don’t get Rylee half the time, and she’s my twin.”
