Her eyes went wide as he helped her into his sleek sports car. “You’re a twin?”

“Didn’t I mention that?” he asked as he sat beside her.

“No. You sure didn’t. I can’t believe there are two of you.”

“Well, Rylee is a lot more trouble than me.”

“I find that really hard to believe.”

He drove the car away from the hotel and glanced at her, smirking. “You think I’m trouble? Me?”

“Yes, you. You are trouble. One second, you kiss me. The next, you tell me that you can’t leave me out of your sight, but you also glare at me sometimes. You’re very hard to read.”

“It’s my superpower. Keep people guessing.”

“How about you keep everyone guessingbutme.”

At her words, the car slowed just long enough for him to look at her. He opened his mouth to speak, but the car behind them honked impatiently, and he focused on the road again.

“Why would I keep everyone guessingbutyou?”

“We’re partners. You shouldn’t keep me in the dark.”

“Right. Well, listen. There are things about my family … about what we are … that I can’t tell you. You just have to trust me and know that I’ve got your best interest at heart.”

Caroline sighed. “I do trust you. I wouldn’t have gotten on a plane with you if I didn’t.”

He aimed a bright smile at her. “And here I thought you didn’t trust me at all.”

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” he whispered back.

Caroline cleared her throat against the heavy tension between them. “We should stop flirting. It just leads to kissing.”

“We should,” he agreed.

Ryland’s phone rang. He looked down at the screen and sent the caller to voicemail. “We’ve got work to do,” he explained. “I can deal with all that later.”

Caroline wanted to ask if it was about the case, but she had a feeling it wasn’t.

Judging by his darkened features and scowl, it was personal.

TWENTY

RYLAND

It was probably a dumb shifter thing.

That had to be it.

Why else would a few words send Ryland tumbling into a vortex of doubts and questions?

Caroline trusts me.

That played on a loop in his mind as he drove them to Lucia’s. Over and over, he heard Caroline softly say,I do trust you.

Why wouldthat,of all things, make him want her? More than the skin-tight dress she wore that showed off all her curves. More than her loose curls tousled to perfection.
