Well, technically he wasn’tmine. I’d just seen him first.

Lexi looked at me. “I’m sorry, Kennedy. It just happened.”

I laughed and brought my hand to my mouth, able to breathe again. “Oh, my God. That’s—” I shook my head. “That’s just… wow. Good for you.”

She heaved a sigh. “You’re not mad?”

“Hell no.”

Holmes gave Lexi a look. “I told you she wouldn’t be.” She looked back at me. “These bitches never believe me.”

“Annnnyway,” Kacey said, letting the word drag out. “We just wanted to check on you and make sure you were okay.” Kacey checked her phone. “Don’t forget volleyball at two.”

Sand volleyball was like a religion to us. It had been our little group’s Sunday afternoon ritual for as long as I could remember. Except the wedding was on a Sunday this week, so volleyball was bumped to today. Wedding rehearsal or not.

“We’ll need to find you a partner since Hendrix is taken,” Holmes said, grabbing another cookie.Seriously. She’s like, a buck twenty-five. Where does she put it?

I always partnered with Hendrix. Always.

“For fuck’s sake, Holmes.” Kacey rolled her eyes and shook her head. She looked back at me. “What she means is you and Lexi will have to switch out.”

Lexi.

Right. Of course.

She partnered with him now.

Because I left.

Holmes pointed and nodded with wide eyes as she chewed as if to sayyes, what she said.

I cleared my throat and forced a smile. “No, it’s fine. I’ll figure something out and see you at two.”

Kacey smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes like usual. “Great.”

Holmes walked over to me. “No.” She looked back at Kacey, then dusted her hands on the front of her pink shorts. “If no one else is going to talk about it, I will.” She glanced at Lexi and Kacey. “Can we have a minute?”

Oh, hell.

“See ya later, Kennedy,” Lexi said, opening the door.

“Love you,” Kacey said, pulling me into a hug.

“Love you too.”

The door closed behind them and I held my breath.

There was no way this was going to be good.

KENNEDY

Ifelt like I was standing in the middle of a tornado, watching life rip up my past from its roots.

Everything had changed. Kacey and Ashton were getting married. Holmes and Dallas were officially a thing. The dynamic of our little group was changing. Would Hendrix get married? Was he next?

“You didn’t see him, Ken,” Holmes said, yanking me from my thoughts.

Thank God, because I was seconds away from vomiting.
