“Man up. We’ve got to get you in gear and he’s going to help me.”

“Okay…”

Getting dressed, I pouted. I wanted to spend today showing her all the reasons she should stay here, while avoiding my reality, but she’d been responsible and had a meeting set up at the farm.

“Ready?” she asked as she came out of the bathroom, looking and smelling good.

“Damn, I’m lucky.” I whistled.

“Why is that?” Michelle asked as she slid on her pumps.

“I thought we were leaving?” I asked as I advanced toward her.

“We are.”

“Then why are you putting on my favorite heels so I can fuck you?” I tried to kiss her, but she evaded me. I followed, and she continued backing up and away from me.

“They already texted me and said they’re on their way. We don’t have time for this. We can come back and you can do whatever you want to me, but right now, I need us to get there on time.” Michelle pressed the issue, but I didn’t care. She had on her serious, non-budging face, so I conceded.

I groaned loudly and stormed to the car.

“I love you, boo!” she yelled after me, and I slammed the door to the house in response.

When she came outside, I helped her into the truck and got in.

“You’re cute when you pout,” Michelle teased.

“Yeah, well, you’re cute all the time,” I retorted. Yes, it was supposed to be a gibe, but I knew the joke was on me the moment the words flowed out.

Michelle giggled and curled up on my side as I drove. Once we got there, we had a few minutes before they pulled up. I recognized him immediately. He’d gone to school with Michelle and me.

“Don?” I checked to make sure that I wasn’t crazy.

“Dante!” We hugged and shook hands. “Man, it’s been a while. I didn’t know you were still here in North Carolina.”

“Born and raised. I couldn’t leave behind my roots. I travel and stuff, but I always come home.”

“I see. Man, this is an impressive set of land. How long has this been in your family?”

“Four generations.”

We walked toward the second dwelling of the house so I could show him the side I wanted to turn into our office. We talked all the way there, and when he stepped inside, he stopped in his tracks.

“Dante, what are you waiting for? This is nice. And you’ve just been sitting on this?”

I could see the wheels turning in his head as we walked.

“Donovan, thank you so much for introducing your wife to Dante and telling me ‘hi.’” Michelle said as she entered with Donovan’s wife.

“Oh, shit! I got so wrapped up… Baby, this is Dante. He went to school with Michelle and me. Dante, this is my wife, Kayleena. I actually did something similar to her second bakery location. She just opened it up. It was part of another business, and they were renting out the other half of their building.”

Kayleena smiled and shook my hand before she pulled out her phone to show me pictures. It was beautiful.

“Did you bring us some goodies?” I half joked. The pastries in her display cases looked amazing.

“I did actually. I don’t know if either of you deserves it since you left us…”

“Point taken.”
