That sounds like bullshit, even as I say it. Yes, I was following orders. Did I enjoy killing her stepfather? Absolutely. He was a piece of shit preying on her.

“Keep telling yourself that.”

“Mind your own damn business, Dash.”

He’s my closest brother. Always has been. He knows me better than anyone.

“She’s not Lizzie, and you sure as hell aren’t the same person you used to be.”

No, I was young and stupid then. I was living some sort of damn fairytale. Thought I could have it all. It was a fucking fantasy. I know that doesn’t exist in this world.

“There.”

A faint light emits from a front window. There’s movement inside, at least three people. Dash takes pictures, capturing it all. A woman walks out and around to the back. A few minutes later, a car exits but no black bikes.

“Follow her.”

Dash obliges, handing me the camera. I manage to snap pics of the license plate just before she pulls into a gas station. She gets out and pumps gas before parking and walking inside.

“I’ll be damned,” Dash says. “She’s the spitting fucking image of Taylor.”

He’s right. Same blonde hair, petite build. Fuck, they even walk the same. It has to be her mom. If she’s come out of hiding, it’s only a matter of time before The Harvester does, too.

Ibrowse the website, finding the option for employment. Christian and Dash left a while ago, no explanation as to where they were headed. I figure they’re going back to the Eagles’ clubhouse. Since I couldn’t sleep, I started job hunting. I’m not going to let my GED go to waste. I worked too hard to get it. Besides, I want Christian to be proud of me.

I go through the submission process, submitting yet another application while doubting I have a chance. Still, I keep going. I can’t necessarily list unwilling sex worker as my previous experience, but I’m a hard worker, loyal, and persistent. Maybe someone will get desperate, I think with a laugh.

“Taylor?” Christian asks, rapping on my door as he pushes it open.

My entire body flushes at the memories from just a few hours ago. It’s crazy how much I want him again. I despised sex, having never had it with someone I chose. Sometimes my body betrayed me, and I hated myself for that. With him, I wanted it. I enjoyed it.

“Yeah?” I close my laptop, grateful for the gift from Lina, and sit up.

“I need you to look at someone and tell me if you recognize her.”

I nod and he brings over his phone, sitting beside me on the bed. He clicks on the screen, playing a video. My stomach roils, vomit quickly rising. I rush to the bathroom and expel any food that I've eaten. It can’t be. Can’t be her.

Christian squats down beside me and I turn, reaching for him. He sits down, closing his arms around me and pulling me onto his lap while I sob.

“Is that your mother?”

I’d somehow convinced myself that I’d never see her again. She split after my stepfather was killed, and I haven’t heard a word from her. My prayers were answered. Two of the people tormenting me the majority of my life were gone.

“Yes.”

She’s back, and I’m terrified.

Taylor cried herself to sleep right there on the bathroom floor. I carried her to her bed and tucked her in, making sure she was comfortable. Then, I went and found Dash.

“It’s her. Shit, man, Taylor was a fucking mess.”
